It's 20-freaking-15 and a multiplayer focused title will ship without built-in voice communication on any of its available platforms. That game is none other than Star Wars Battlefront. We already knew that the game didn't have voice chat during the beta, but most of us probably said that it's reasonable because it's a beta! Turns out the final game won't have voice chat either. EA confirmed this news on Twitter.
The only way you'll be able to chat with others in your game is to form a private party with them and use either the system chat on Xbox Live or the one built into PlayStation Network parties. On PC? Your options are third party programs and probably far more difficult to pull random public players into.
You want to know the most amazing thing about all of this? Only one day ago, when DICE and EA revealed the Droid Run game mode for Battlefront, the following lines were included in their description.
So, in tight and fast 6-versus-6 matches, your objective is to capture and hold all the three Droids before the 10-minute time limit is up. You’ll get help from weapon pickups but Heroes, Villains, and vehicles won’t be joining the run. Communication is vital, so let your teammates know if you've spotted a Droid somewhere, how to find it, and if there are enemy forces nearby.
Incredible. Simply incredible. Between this, the complete lack of a server browser, and the difficulty of simply playing with friends, no consumer should stand for this. But you know what? People are going to lap this game up without blinking an eye simply because it's Star Wars.
On top of that the game mode where the AT-ATs are attacking, I forget the name, people have talked about how tough the mode is and how communication for the rebels is key to win the game, otherwise you get stomped by the Empire side every time.
But, you know, those are just PC issues. Minor minor things, right? Kinda like annoying keyboard and mouse support or FOV controls.
The thing is though the marketing is telling a story, but the game is doing something different. Its not Battlefield is what they are touting, but they keep talking about teamwork and communication and balance and all that, with the tools for teamwork and communication gone on game modes that are off balance.
Im sure it will be a fun game for those that have been waiting for it.
