GSC Game World announced that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope will release on August 20, 2026. This will be Stalker 2's first major expansion for Heart of Chornobyl, and the hope is to release on August 20th for PC and consoles.
On that same date, GSC Game World hopes to also release what they're calling "Update 2.0" for Stalker 2. This major update will upgrade Stalker 2 to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5 as well as adding in "a variety of new content and improvements." This Update 2.0 will be free to all owners of Stalker 2, while the Cost of Hope expansion will have a cost associated with it.
Currently, Stalker 2 runs on Unreal Engine 5.1. This earlier release of Unreal Engine 5 lacks many of the improvements and fixes that were added in subsequent updates. It's Unreal Engine 5.6 and later that are said to include some of the biggest improvements to open world titles (read as "less stutter"). However, according to GSC Game World's own roadmap for Stalker 2, the studio planned to update to Unreal Engine 5.5.4.
While still great for optimization, it would lack some of the further improvements that were made in Unreal Engine 5.6 and later for open world experiences. Given that the roadmap was last updated back in August 2025, it's entirely possible that plans have changed. According to an old comment made by a GSC Game Dev on the official Stalker Discord, there's a small chance they may actually jump to Unreal Engine 5.6. Ultimately, that decision will "depend on testing."
