It's a pretty big release day for a lot of games.
A neon soaked image showing glowing green armor on three sci-fi soldiers standing amongst the skyscapers of an alien world. The face of an alien looms large in the background.

Let's just get this all out of the way now, because otherwise there would be a separate news post for all of this and I'm not about that life today. Apparently, February 28th is the day that publishers and developers were like, "Yeah, that date is a great time to get a new season/game/update out to everyone!"

We've got some Destiny 2: Lightfall, there's new Battlefield 2042 content, there's Catan, Fallout 76 got a big new content update today too, and I'm sure there's more. You'll come along with me as I make my way through my work email to find out just what all there is today in terms of updates and new releases.

Catan - Console Edition

First up is Catan - Console Edition for PlayStation and Xbox consoles. This is a new console release of the popular physical board game that allows you to play with friends online or as a group in couch play. This one is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S from Dovetail Games and Nomad Games.

Players will immerse themselves in an animated board, populated with characters farming and mining resources, sheep roaming their respective hexes and the Robber waiting for their moment to move. Ships occupy the surrounding harbours and Settlements and Cities appear as players continue to build and trade with one another.

Success comes with earning Victory Points, which can be gained in various ways including building the ‘Longest Road’ or amassing the ‘Largest Army’. Building Cities and Settlements also earn these points with the five key resources on the island needed to build and expand in the areas between the hexes. Strategy is key to success and players will have to decide throughout each game whether to plough on with their own building, or work with their opponents, AI or real, by trading resources and moving the Robber in order to thwart others’ progress.
Those playing together on the couch can use a Card Companion app on their phone to make sure nobody else can see your resources. Cross-play is also enabled allowing PlayStation and Xbox owners able to play against each other.

Catan - Console Edition starts at $19.99 (USD).

Scars Above

A new sci-fi third-person shooter set in space is now available. It's called Scars Above and it's supposed to be rather challenging for those that like difficult games. Scars Above can be picked up for $39.99 (USD) with a 15% launch week discount on Steam. It's also available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

Scars Above puts players in the space boots of Dr. Kate Ward as she finds herself abducted then lost on a surreal and dangerous alien world. Players will have to use Ward’s scientific aptitude, wreckage from her ship, and the planet’s local wildlife to survive.
So far, reviews for Scars Above are mixed, sitting just below the equally polarizing Atomic Heart.

SnowRunner Season 9 & Year 3 Pass

If you like new content and season passes and snow, then SnowRunner has you covered today. Season 9 and the Year 3 Pass for this off road simulator are now available. The Year 3 Pass includes four seasons worth of content, with the first one starting today with new maps, new trucks, and new cosmetics. Specifically, Season 9 adds in two new maps, two new vehicles, and new activities.

Season 9: Renew & Rebuild takes you to Ontario, Canada, a brand-new region in SnowRunner, where you need to help get the devastated region back on its feet following ravaging wildfires. Drive off the roads of Albany River and Burnt Forest, two new 4km² maps with early autumn moods and a melancholic feel for a soothing experience as you bring life back to a desolate landscape of burnt forest and buildings, flooded farmland, water towers and disaster relief tents.
This new Season and the start of the Year 3 Pass is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The Pegasus Expedition

A new update for this Early Access grand strategy title is out today. This update adds in a new scenario called "At the Center of it All."

Instead of just one star system, the scenario starts players with a large territory of control, encircling the centre of the galaxy, however the player's reputation will decrease after every turn, so they’ll need to act fast to avoid all-out war with every other faction.

In addition to the new scenario, the content update also introduces a number of quality of life changes and fixes to the game.

Destiny 2: Lightfall

We have covered this new expansion release rather extensively over the past few weeks. Our coverage includes the full changelog for this new expansion, the launch trailer, a look at the new Strand subclass, and more.

Lightfall and Update are now out and playable to everyone. Bungie wants everyone to know that the game's new raid, The Root of Nightmares, will be available starting March 10 at 9AM (PT). There will once again be a race to see who can earn the World's First title once this raid is out there.

Those playing Among Us may be happy to hear that there are some Destiny-themed cosmetics now available in that game starting today. They include cosmetics and items inspired by Destiny's classes along with items based on Osiris, Lord Shaxx, Saint-14, Eris Morn, and more.

Another collab, this time with SteelSeries and KontrolFreek, bring some Destiny 2: Lightfall themed peripherals and accessories to you... for a price.

Battlefield 2042 Season 4: Eleventh Hour

The newest season of Battlefield 2042 is now available. Called Eleventh Hour, this new season adds new weapons, a new vehicle, a new Specialist, new map (Flashpoint), and more. Take a look at the Update 4.0.0 changelog if you'd like.

Later in the season we will see the release of the Discarded map rework. There will also be a new time-limited event coming later called Leviathan Rising.

Fallout 76 - Mutation Invasion

A new update for Fallout 76 offers a new twist on the familiar public events present in the game. Mutation Invasion will offer players more challenging event encounters and with that greater challenge comes greater rewards.

Mutations are strange evolutionary buffs that make your foes even deadlier. At the top of the hour, every hour, a Mutated Public Event will appear. A special icon will indicate the Public Event is Mutated, with regular Public Events appearing for the remainder of the hour. Mutated Public Events can include certain conditions such as:
  • Volatile: Enemies explode upon death
  • Active Camouflage: Enemies are cloaked when not attacking
  • Resilient: Enemies can only be slain with a melee attack
  • Freezing Touch: Slow targets down upon attack
  • Toxic Blood: Enemies leave behind small poisonous hazard upon death
  • Group regeneration: Enemies heal each other when within radius
  • Swift Footed: Increased movement and attack speed
While Mutations increase the challenge of Public Events, surviving brings plenty of rewards. Completing Mutated Public Events will earn players loot including XP, Legendary items, Treasury Notes or even a Mutated Package, containing a chance for some rare goodies.
Daily Ops are also being improved a bit today. Plus, Season 12 for Fallout 76 begins. This new Season is called "Rip Daring and the Cryptid Hunt" and it once again offers plenty of items like consumables, currency, and cosmetics that you can unlock by playing the game.

The battle royale was updated today to version 23.50. This update is all about cracking a code and getting those remaining Geralt of Rivia unlocks before the March 8th cutoff. The end of the season follows just a couple of days later on March 10th.

The Six Shooter and Infantry Rifle were also unvaulted in today's update, so enjoy those "old" weapons.

Both Save the World and Creative modes also got updates today.
