According to a report from Android Central of all places, Sony is apparently decreasing their investment in virtual reality gaming. Sony allegedly has just two first-party titles currently in development for PlayStation VR2.
Sources speaking with Android Central say that Sony is "making deep cuts to funding for VR games." For a lot of PlayStation VR2 owners out there, it is probably a bit hard to imagine Sony investing even less on the development of new virtual reality games.
According to Wikipedia, there have been only two first-party PlayStation VR2 titles released. They are: Gran Turismo 7 from Polyphony Digital and Horizon Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla Games and Firesprite. At least in the case of Gran Turismo 7, it wasn't even released as a VR title having had the feature added in a later update. Sony also published a PS VR2 title named Firewall Ultra from First Contact Entertainment, a development studio that shut down at the start of 2024.
Android Central's report notes something rather interesting. They bring up the recent hack of Insomniac Games and the resulting leak of information that came from that. Among all those leaked files, there was not a single item that suggested Insomniac Games was working on any VR game for PlayStation VR2. Insomniac is the same studio that created AR and VR titles for Meta and Magic Leap, among them being the highly praised and much loved Stormland. Since Sony acquired Insomniac in August 2019, they have worked on zero VR titles.
Sony's PlayStation VR 2 output has been nothing short of absolutely embarrassing since its February 2023 launch, especially for a device that retails at $550. Perhaps if Sony had shown the hardware some actual attention, it wouldn't be dealing with a situation where they had to develop a $60 PC adaptor just to try to sell some of the units that are piling up in storage. Now, an already terrible situation is somehow getting even worse.
