Unity Changes Terms Once More, Commits to 'Being an Open Platform'

Unity has had a real interesting seven days. Last week, SpatialOS from developer Improbable was apparently barred from being used within Unity development. SpatialOS is a robust tool that many Unity developers use to add multiplayer to their games. For a time, Unity's new Terms, which went live in early December but were only clarified to Improbable last week, actually affected games that were already released. This led to some quick back and forths between Improbable and Unity through their respective sites. It all seemed to quiet down when Improbable and Epic Games formed a joint $25...

EA Cancels Yet Another Star Wars Game (Update)

A headline like "EA Cancels Another Star Wars Game" feels like they're a dime a dozen these days. I think EA may have cancelled as many Star Wars games as they have closed studios at this point. Here we are again and here EA is with another cancelled EA game on their hands. This time, the development studio has decided to cancel its open-world Star Wars game that EA Vancouver had been working on. Prior to EA Vancouver working on this title, it was in development from Visceral Games. Of course, EA shut down Visceral Games back in 2017. In fact, when Visceral was working on the game it wasn't an open-world title but rather a more linear action-adventure game that was being directed by...

Review: Last Year: The Nightmare (PC)

A solid asymmetrical survival-horror game that's light on content.

Asymmetrical multiplayer games have been going steady for the past few years now. Some of the biggest games in that particular genre include the long departed Evolve, the still ongoing Dead by Daylight, and even Friday the 13th if you're into that sort of thing. You can now add in Last Year: The Nightmare to the mix as it combines 5 versus 1 multiplayer with elements of survival-horror. As with those other titles, Last Year places one player in the shoes of a bloodthirsty murderer while the rest of the players play as one of five teenagers trying to survive and escape. What it delivers is a well-crafted gameplay experience that ultimately comes up short on content. Last Year: The Nightmare relies on a number of tried and true horror movie clich├ęs. The group of teenagers include the nerdy kid, the popular girl, a stereotypical jock, and m...

Jump Force Open Beta Begins January 18

Come January 18th, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners will get to try out Jump Force in what Bandai Namco is calling an "open beta weekend." Be it a true beta or a "demo" is besides the point because what really matters is that you will finally get to test drive the fighting game that we have been passing along news about now for months.

Here's how it's going to go down. First off, there will be four separate three-hour long sessions:

Secondly? Well, that's kind of it. Just make sure you download the demo and you can play during...

Bungie Ditches Activision, Acquires Rights to Destiny

Moving forward, all future Destiny titles will be self-published by Bungie. I guess even Activision had to tap out after the latest Destiny 2 puzzle, eh?

After eight years, Bungie and Activision are parting ways and with it so does Activision's control over the Destiny franchise. Bungie announced today that they are acquiring publishing rights to their popular shooter.

Mere moments ago, Bungie made the announcement on their website in an aptly named news entry called "Our Destiny."

Bungie continues on to say that they will...

Battlefield 5 is Now Available... Again

The release for Battlefield 5 is here!... Again!... For the fourth time!

It's November 20th which means it's time for Battlefield 5 Standard Edition to be released. This comes after the Deluxe Edition was released on November 15, which came after the Origin Access Premier release on November 9th, which came on the same day as the Origin Access and EA Access early release that allowed you to play for 10 hours.

Needlessly staggered release schedule aside, Battlefield 5 is now out for everyone to pick up and play provided you play on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PC via Origin.
Battlefield V gives fans the chance to play the untold stories and

  • Battlefield V is Now the First Game to Support Ray Tracing

Battlefield V is Now the First Game to Support Ray Tracing

With today's update to the game, Battlefield V is now the first game out there to support DirectX's real-time ray tracing (DXR). If you own an Nvidia 20xx card, you may want to check it out for yourself. Or maybe don't, because the performance hit is, to put it mildly, massive.
So, what is ray tracing? Essentially, an algorithm traces the path of light from many different viewpoints and simulates the way it interacts with 3D objects in the scene. As the ray moves through the scene it accumulates color and light information along the way from all objects it encounters. These interactions are then combined to produce the final color of a pixel, that will be displayed on screen. Tracing from smooth surfaces like windows, ca

  • Battlefield V Battle Royale Mode Won't Be Out Until March 2019

Battlefield V Battle Royale Mode Won't Be Out Until March 2019

According to the just released Battlefield V roadmap, the battle royale mode for the game won't be released until at least March 2019. Talk about just handing the "W" to Treyarch and Activision with their Blackout mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. By the time March rolls around, Blackout will have had a solid five months to be refined and handle customer feedback.
Battle Royale comes to Battlefield with Firestorm and the war reaches Greece as the third Tides of War chapter is unleashed in the Spring.

EA and DICE just released the official single player trailer for Battlefield V. This new trailer gives us a tiny glimpse of the campaign that players will get to experience for themselves come November 20.
Discover the untold stories of World War 2 with Battlefield V's single player War Stories. In Nordlys, resist German occupation in Norway, sabotage behind enemy lines as an unlikely English soldier in Under No Flag, fight for a home you've never seen in Tirailleur, and in The Last Tiger (available in December) join the crew of a Tiger I as they question why they fight.

  • Battlefield 1 Premium Pass Will Be Free for One Week Following Battlefield V Open Beta

We already know that Battlefield V will not have any Premium Pass to bump up the cost of the game. All future content for the game, save for probably cosmetics, will be free so long as you at least own the base game. That's pretty neat.

However, a game that still does have a Premium Pass is Battlefield 1. If you own the game, then you may want to stay tuned for next week when DICE and EA will make the Battlefield 1 Premium Pass available for free to everyone for a limited time. It works like this: After the open beta for Battlefield V ends on September 11, DICE and EA will make the Premium Pass for Battlefield 1 free to everyone for one full we...

  • Battlefield V Delayed Until November; Beta Still on Track

Battlefield V Delayed Until November; Beta Still on Track

EA and DICE just announced that they have pushed back the release date for Battlefield V until November 20, 2018. This places the release at a period that's about one month after its originally planned October 19 release date.

General manager of DICE Oskar Gabrielson, made the announcement today with a lengthy explanation as to the reason why.
We believe we have one of the best Battlefield games ever on our hands. A game that will deliver on an emotional journey through the return of unseen single player War Stories, a deep multiplayer experience, Battle Royale, along with our new live service, Tides of War - a journey across multiple theaters of WW2

Battlefield V's Co-op "Combined Arms" Mode Coming After Launch

According to the multiplayer portion of the Battlefield V website, the co-op focused "Combined Arms" mode for the game will be released after the game's launch.

This mode joins the battle royale mode as being yet another piece of content that won't be ready for Battlefield V's launch on October 19. Hell, for a long time there, it was also rumored that the much discussed Grand Operations mode would also miss the October launch as well, but DICE was quick to squash that piece of misinformation.

You know, and maybe this is just crazy talk here, it is okay to delay the release of Battlefield V. Maybe give it some more...

  • Reports of "Weak" Battlefield 5 Pre-Orders Attributed to Lack of Informative Sources from Analyst

Just a week ago, a number of news stories popped up about weak pre-order sales figures for Battlefield V. We were also among the many outlets that put up at least one story about this. Many of us even went so far as to say that EA's decision to sandwich Battlefield V's release between the year's two most anticipated titles were not doing the game any favors. And while it's still probably true that the earlier lack of marketing and the release date aren't really doing Battlefield 5 any favors, it also might not be selling as badly as we thought. On August 14, an analyst at Cowen said that "pre-order sales of Battlefield V have been weak." What we didn't know at the time, is th...

  • Battlefield V Open Beta Begins September 4; New Ray Tracing Features Announced

The open beta for Battlefield V begins on September 4 for those that pre-order the game and on September 6 for everyone else. This open beta will be available to everyone on the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

This beta will include the Rotterdam map on Conquest mode and the Arctic Fjord map on Conquest and Grand Operations. DICE and EA showed off some Rotterdam gameplay a few days ago. This is the same footage that they're showing off this week at Gamescom 2018.

In addition to this beta news, it was revealed today that Battlefield V will make use of Nvidia's RTX tech for real-time ray tracing.

Building a Better TGN Part 2 - Overview of New and Returning Features
    Shawn Zipay

Last week I kind of detailed the process of what it took to even get the site up and running following the upgrade to vBulletin 5.4.5 from 4.2.1. Today, I'll go over some of the new features for all of you members out there, plus some of the more forward facing changes made to the site. I'll try to make this short and a bit more concise than last week's entry. Custom StyleThe most obvious thing you will notice when visiting the site is the current site design. I worked for a long time customizing a site design from one of the default vBulletin designs. Customizations include, but are not limited to:...

Building a Better TGN Part 1 - Banks and Technical Issues
    Shawn Zipay
As you have probably noticed by now, Total Gaming Network is looking a little bit different than what it was only about a month ago. We are now on the latest version of vBulletin, which just happens to be 5.4.5. We are also on a far more up-to-date version of PHP. We are also on some better server hardware than we were previously. The Boring Technical StuffThis particular version of vBulletin (5.4.5) came out roughly a month ago. We were previously on vBulletin 4.2.1, a release that initially came out in mid-2013. This equates to roughly 5-6 yea...
