• Capcom Again Sets Unrealistic Sales Goal. This Time for Resident Evil 7

During a post-earnings Q&A session, Capcom revealed that they want to see Resident Evil 7 hit lifetime sales figures of 10 million units. Ten. Million. Units.

Let's put that into some sort of perspective for you.

From its launch in January through to March, Resident Evil 7 shipped 3.5 million units. This was already about 500,000 units short of their initial plan to sell 4 million units in that same span of time.

Right now, the best selling Resident Evil title is... If you said Resident Evil 4, you'd be wrong. It's actually Resident Evil 5. According to Capcom's own list of top sellers, Resident Evil 5 has sold "only" 7.2 million units to date. Resident Evil 6 is close behind at 6.8 million units sold.

Naturally, this list could be a bit misleading and may not include sales from multiple platforms. Capcom did say that total sales of Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 "have each sold more than 7.5 to 10 million units cumulatively." This is a figure that includes multiple platforms and their numerous re-releases on different generations of consoles. You have to keep in mind that these milestones have taken years to reach. Hell, Resident Evil 4 alone came out over 12 years ago.

So maybe 10 million units for Resident Evil 7 is feasible but it may not hit that milestone until the PlayStation 6 rolls around.

Given how much accurate prediction goes on in the world of business, how much money companies invest into market research, why does this keep happening?
Unless they are lying to shareholders and investors to keep them happy, and thus have to announce the same goals to the public.

I believe this is the reason. The goal will never be feasible to reach anytime soon, but shareholders are likely not easily pleased with more conservative numbers compared to various other industries traded on the stock market. Then again, how stupid are shareholders to believe in these target numbers? Even if they're not gamers, they can see how long it takes to reach said goals from due diligence. Heck what Zips dug up doesn't require him to be a gamer. It's public information for anyone to find. So while Capcom is trying to please their shareholders, like Square-Enix did with Tomb Raider's unrealistic goals, I do wonder how gullible shareholders are?

Otherwise I can not even fathom why companies would set these projected goals, and then fire staff when developers can't get a product God-like amazing enough to sell that much.

I wonder if the success of GTA V, 11ish millions copies in the first 24h, is responsible for that kind of expectations
