Development on a yet-unannounced Disney video game from Epic Games has been delayed as developers are instructed to pivot hard towards an "AI first" development model with "full AI workflows." This story was originally reported by Bloomberg, which states that the collaboration with Disney was intended to be a shooter game featuring elements from Star Wars and various Marvel properties.
Bloomberg says that this project was supposed to be released in March, but has now been indefinitely delayed in order to force developers at Epic to use garbage-making programs such as Anthropic's AI assistant, Claude. The only thing humans are expected to do after AI makes all the spaghetti code is to oversee whatever bullshit Claude vomits out.
An internal memo about this "AI first" push was obtained by Bloomberg.
Developers on the game, a shooter featuring characters from the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, were instructed to implement an “AI first” production model using tools such as Anthropic’s Claude. Humans will then manage and guide that work. “No more hand-written code,” one of the game’s directors told staff in an internal message reviewed by Bloomberg. The director added that all art for the game would be “generated with full AI workflows.”
The announcement left some Epic developers stunned on a video call last week, according to the people. Some made jokes about how they should handle errors produced by the AI-generated work, asking if they should ask Claude to fix its own mistakes. Some said they hoped that it was not a serious request or that the company would reverse course, arguing that the initiative wouldn’t be as successful as Epic hoped.
We have a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration.
The aim isn't to do the same stuff with fewer people, but to enable everyone here to build MORE and BETTER stuff, and to bring the benefits to all teams using Unreal.
Our more modest aim is to survive the AI revolution, help other developers do the same, and come out on the other end making better code and content faster.
