Sales Figures for Anthem are Half Those of Andromeda in UK

As far as physical retail sales go, Anthem was the best selling game in the UK in its first week of release.

That's the extent of the good news.

The bad news is that it sold roughly half of the total number of units BioWare's previous title sold in its first week. That's right, Mass "My Face is Tired" Effect Andromeda outsold BioWare's latest and, er, let's just leave it at "latest."

Digital sales for these titles are not included in these sales figures. Meaning that the number of units sold on services like Origin for PC, or the...

  • EA Apparently Blames Weak Battlefield V Sales on Prioritizing Campaign Over Battle Royale

Just when you thought the general rabble about Battlefield V was finally quieting down, EA released their Q3 2019 financials to investors today. In doing so, EA's top brass say that Battlefield V sold roughly 1 million units below expectations because development prioritized a single player campaign over getting a battle royale mode ready for launch.

To its credit, Battlefield V still sold 7.3 million units across all platforms, but it's still considered underperforming according to EA's expectations. This disappointment was conveyed today by EA CEO Andrew Wilson.

Kingdom Hearts 3 Ships 5 Million Units Already

It seems as though Kingdom Hearts fans are super thirsty because Square Enix has already shipped 5 million copies of Kingdom Hearts 3. While this doesn't necessarily mean that the game has sold 5 million units, it's still a very good indicator that the game is selling like hot cakes. Kingdom Hearts 3 was just released on January 29, 2019.

Square Enix did confirm that the 5 million figure does include both digital and physical units. They also go on to confirm that Kingdom Hearts 3 is the fastest selling game in the history of the franchise. This game is also the first one...

You Spent Over $43 Billion on Video Games in 2018

According to The NPD Group, consumers spent over $43 billion on video games throughout 2018. That marks an 18% increase over 2017 spending. There are a couple of important notes about this. This figure is for both software and hardware. It also does not take into account digital sales since the NPD cannot reliably track digital sales figures.

The best selling title of the year was Red Dead Redemption 2. The second and third best selling titles in 2018 were Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and NBA 2K19 respectively.

Though the best offering from Nintendo came in at the...

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales Sales Disappoint CD Projekt RED

Sales figures for Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales have been disappointing, at least to developer CD Projekt RED. It turns out that the GOG exclusivity didn't really work out all that well for them. That certainly seems to explain why we saw the game quickly appearing on Steam just a couple of weeks after its initial GOG release.

This news came during CD Projekt RED's financial call yesterday. CEO Adam Kicinski provided the following.
"The game appealed to the community, which drove up our expectations regarding sales. Unfortunately, as yet, these expectations have not been fulfilled. Still, we remain optimistic ... We expect to continue to sell

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 Sold More Units in 8 Days than Red Dead Redemption Sold in 8 Years

As if there were any lingering doubt about how much of a sales success Red Dead Redemption 2 is, this latest blurb in the Q2 2019 financial report from Take-Two will put some things into perspective.

Take-Two says that Red Dead Redemption 2 sold more units in eight days than Red Dead Redemption sold in eight years. That is a staggering difference there.

The report goes on to say that Red Dead Redemption 2 has already sold over 17 million units worldwide. Red Dead Redemption 2 has only been on sale for less than two weeks now. As far as other figures go, strong sales continue for GTA Online...

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 Surpasses $725 Million in 3 Days

Red Dead Redemption 2 Surpasses $725 Million in 3 Days

Red Dead Redemption 2 has apparently achieved the biggest opening weekend of all time across all forms of entertainment. This at least what Rockstar is telling me and why would they lie about their own game release? Do you really think someone would do that? How distrusting you are. So what does "biggest opening weekend of all time" really mean? Well, it means that Red Dead Redemption 2 had the biggest opening weekend in retail sell-through across all media types. It also had the second biggest launch (over three days) across all entertainment releases. I'm not sure what the difference is between being the biggest weekend and being the second biggest launch as it's des...

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Sales Surpasses $500 Million in Three Days

The lack of a single player campaign sure as hell doesn't seem to matter to most of the gaming world, as evident by the fact that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has pulled in over $500 million (USD) in worldwide sales just over its launch weekend.

To put it perspective, that is about the same amount that Call of Duty: WWII pulled in last year. However, it is down ever so slightly from Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 that pulled in over $550 million in its first three days.
"Black Ops 4 is off to a blockbuster start," said Activision executive vice president and Call of Duty GM Rob Kostich. "Our player counts and hours played are up year

  • Reports of "Weak" Battlefield 5 Pre-Orders Attributed to Lack of Informative Sources from Analyst

Just a week ago, a number of news stories popped up about weak pre-order sales figures for Battlefield V. We were also among the many outlets that put up at least one story about this. Many of us even went so far as to say that EA's decision to sandwich Battlefield V's release between the year's two most anticipated titles were not doing the game any favors. And while it's still probably true that the earlier lack of marketing and the release date aren't really doing Battlefield 5 any favors, it also might not be selling as badly as we thought. On August 14, an analyst at Cowen said that "pre-order sales of Battlefield V have been weak." What we didn't know at the time, is th...

  • The Ghost of Titanfall 2 Haunts Battlefield 5 as Analyst States "Weak" Pre-order Figures

Less than a day after EA executive Patrick Soderlund announced his departure from the company, comes word that pre-order sales for Battlefield V are not doing all that well.

Analysts at Cowen say that "pre-order sales of Battlefield V have been weak." These thoughts from Cowen come courtesy of Sarah Needleman, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal.

Cowen feels as though the release date and a lack of marketing are really hurting Battlefield V. They say that "Battlefield could suffer the same fate as EA's 'Titanfall 2'."

As it stands, Battlefield V's release week is pinned smack dab between Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of...

Madden Franchise Surpasses 130 Million Copies Sold

EA just informed us that the entirety of the Madden NFL franchise has surpassed 130 million units sold. The first Madden game was called John Madden Football and it was originally released on MS-DOS. Most current players probably have no idea what in the world DOS even is.

Since then it has come out on platforms such as the Genesis, SNES, Windows, every PlayStation platform, Xbox consoles, and more. Even the Madden NFL games have managed to achieve almost 73 million installs over the years. There's even a new mobile game, Madden NFL Overdrive, coming out on August 15. Right now, the sales figures are...

Nintendo Switch Surpasses Wii to Become Fastest Selling Console in US

According to a Tweet by Nintendo from earlier today, the Nintendo Switch has become the "fastest selling video game system of all time" in the United States. Additional details provided by Nintendo say that in the period from March 3 through December 31, 2017, Nintendo sold 4.8 million Switch units. That figure is just for the States. Total worldwide sales figures were not revealed today.

To compare, the incredibly well received Wii sold just 4 million units in the same span of time. The Wii was the previous king of "fastest selling console." Keep in mind that the Wii went on to become one of the best selling consoles...
