Carmack did seem to be a primary engineering force behind Oculus, Luckey's history does involve a lot of computer tinkering but it was the Kickstarter and Carmack's arrival which really got things going. It was only about a year after the Kickstarter when the DK1 arrived which was already, despite being in a prototype state, the most functional VR headset ever created, with that to show after such a short period and relatively little funding Facebook jumped on the acquisition propelling Luckey into super stardom and pretty much an overnight millionaire, and you'd have to think Carmack would see some of that money also, especially if he was so crucial in the Rift's creation.

That of course is just a conspiracy without evidence, if Zenimax have any to prove Carmack did what he's accused of then this would have been over a long time ago i'd have thought, unless they were waiting for the loss of profits via stolen company assets to build for a really good payday. I'm not against the current truth, that independent Luckey + Carmack invented the Oculus, people invent things all the time, but the accusation does explain maybe the pace at which it was invented.
