Today, DICE and EA finally took the lid off of Battlefield 2042, the next installment of their popular FPS franchise. There are some big changes awaiting players when the game releases on October 22 for PC (Steam, Origin, Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Battlefield 2042 will support matches with up to 128 players on the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. There will now be "real-time events that reshape the battlefield." Of course, there will be plenty of new weapons, vehicles, and gadgets to play with in this release.
In Battlefield 2042, the world is on the brink. Shortages of food, energy, and clean water have led to dozens of failed nations, creating the greatest refugee crisis in human history. Among these Non-Patriated, or No-Pats, are families, farmers, engineers – and even soldiers. Amidst this crisis, the United States and Russia draw the world into an all-out war. No-Pat Specialists join both sides, not fighting for a flag, but for the future of the Non-Patriated in this new world.
From the sounds of things, there is no single player campaign included in Battlefield 2042, nor are their any current plans for a battle royale mode. Yes, it is still priced at $59.99 (USD) for the standard edition of the game. There will be a new game mode coming called Hazard Mode (more on that below). Another new game type will be revealed during EA Play in July.
DICE says that they will be "evolving our world and expanding on the fiction through Seasons." Seasons will last roughly three months. Each Season will include a free and a paid-for Battle Pass that will offer new content to try to earn. The first year will feature four Seasons, four Battle Passes, four new Specialists, and other content.
On the previous generation of consoles, the maps will be smaller in size. Player counts on these older consoles will also be capped at 64 players.
