First there was PSSR, now there is QSSR. The wait for RSSR begins.

Sony just announced that the base PlayStation 5 console will soon get its own form of AI upscaling to rival the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

The new solution for base PS5 consoles is being called Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR. QSSR is also the result of a collaboration dubbed Project Amethyst between PlayStation and AMD. This AI upscaling technology is "built on two key innovations."

Those two innovations are:
  • A streamlined neural network architecture
  • A hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5
Principal engineer for graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Daniel Craig, claims that QSSR brings "notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5."

The first PlayStation 5 titles to use QSSR are Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei. Both of these titles are getting patched with the new upscaling technology today. Developers from Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions shared some clips showing the image quality improvements that QSSR offers in these titles.

These examples demonstrate minor visual improvements using static scenes. However, the real challenge for QSSR will be its ability to maintain image stability during actual gameplay. Some upscalers, particularly earlier versions of FSR, often suffer from ghosting and distortion around moving objects. We'll likely need to wait a day or two for detailed technical analyses that might reveal any shortcomings of QSSR.
