In an interview with Famitsu (translated by IGN), Final Fantasy 16 director Hiroshi Takai says that the development of the upcoming RPG is going well. When asked about the current status of the game, Takai says that the team is "about 95%" done with development.

Right now, the developers seem to be in the home stretch leading up to the Summer 2023 release window for Final Fantasy 16. They are actively focused on debugging and smoothing out any rough edges in the game. Given that this is a new mainline Final Fantasy, this process could take quite a while, as would be the case with most RPGs.

Those looking for a release date that is a bit more specific than "Summer 2023" may not have too long to wait. Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida says that they "plan to announce some more information before the end of the year." Yoshida expects that they will be able to announce the release date at that same time. He also ads that he doesn't "think we'll go beyond the summer."

As of right now, we only know about Final Fantasy 16 coming to the PlayStation 5. Future release platforms are still unknown.
