The latest news posting by Bungie's DeeJ says that microtransactions and a new currency are coming soon to Destiny. Beginning on October 13, the in-game NPC Tess Everis returns to the tower along with the Eververse Trading Company.

This new system will include new items to sell starting off with 18 new emotes. All of these items can be purchased with the new in-game currency, Silver. Silver, as you may already guess, can be purchased with real-world money through your preferred platform's (Xbox Live, PSN) market.

Bungie says that if you don't want to purchase anything from Tess you will never have to.
If you’re not interested in what Tess has to offer, you won’t ever be forced to pluck an item off of her shelf. You’ll still receive updates to the game, and you won’t lose a Crucible encounter or fail to clear a Raid because you didn’t have the right Eververse Trading Company emote equipped.

Our plan is to use these new items to bolster the service provided by our live team for another full year, as they grow and create more robust and engaging events that we’ll announce later this year. It has been, and continues to be, our goal to deliver updates to the game. Going forward, our live team is also looking to grow beyond vital updates and improvements to focus on world events, experiences, and feature requests.

In fact, if you log in next week Bungie says they will gift you some free Silver so that you can purchase an emote or two on the house.

Naturally, if the Eververse Trading Company sticks only to cosmetic items, there will never be much to complain about with this. However, the tune may be different if things like weapons or armor ever show up for sale.
