XBOX: 1,600 Layoffs Today, Another 1,600 Over the Next Year, Four Studios Now Independent or Sold, Arkane in Limbo

More broadly, Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs.

Today, Microsoft is laying off 2.1% of its workforce. This equates to 4,800 people that are being let go. The company's XBOX division is cutting about 20% of its entire workforce. All of this is being done in an effort to cut costs due to rising prices and expenses brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).

As a quick reminder: Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on AI in 2026. In 2025, the company spent $80 billion...

PlayStation is Killing Physical Game Discs

Digital only after January 2028.

Starting January 2028, Sony will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation game releases. All games released in January 2028 and after will be available only through digital stores such as the PlayStation Store.

Sony attempts to justify this move by claiming it's a "natural direction" in order to "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."...

Lord of Hatred Review: Diablo 4 Finally Finds Its Final Form

This is Diablo 4 at its best. I mean it this time. For real.

Returning to the world of Sanctuary for this latest chapter feels like a true homecoming for those of us who have spent hundreds of hours traversing its dark and unforgiving landscapes since the base game launched back in 2023. The release of the Lord of Hatred expansion marks a significant step forward in the narrative that was originally set in motion during the initial campaign and furthered by the events of the Vesse...

First Games to Use AMD's FSR 2.0 Upscaling Announced

    Besides Deathloop.

In June 2021, AMD launched the 1.0 release of what they call FidelityFX Super Resolution. This was kind of AMD's answer to Nvidia's DLSS technology, except it did not require the use of special hardware and could be used by graphics cards dating back several generations. FSR allows users to upscale an image to provide them with better performance while still looking kind of good.

FSR 1.0 isn't perfect, nor does it do as good a job as DLSS, but it did...

Elden Ring Sold 13.4 Million Copies in First Month

This is officially FromSoftware's most successful game to date.

The final tally is in, and it seems like Elden Ring sold over 13.4 million copies in a bit over its first month of availability. This makes Elden Ring the best selling FromSoftware title of all time.

Of course, we kind of already knew this. We previously heard that Elden Ring sold over 12 million copies in its first three weeks of availability. That means that an additional 1.4 million copies were sold over...

2001 Build of Duke Nukem Forever is Available for Download

You're right, it's not yet June.

Word about the 2001 build of Duke Nukem Forever being leaked out into the wild just earlier this week. At the time, the leaker known by the handle of "x0r" said that they would probably release this build in June some time. Until June, all we would have to tide us over would be a handful of screenshots and short video clips.

As it turns out, June came early this year as the unfinished build of Duke Nukem Forever is now available...

Wolfire's Antitrust Lawsuit Against Valve is Back On

Wolfire's amended lawsuit is given the greenlight by the court.

In April 2021, Wolfire Games filed a lawsuit against Valve. The lawsuit claimed that through Steam, Valve somehow suppresses the competition. The lawsuit was dismissed in November 2021 because it failed to meet necessary standards for the court. Wolfire had 30 days to amend their complaint and refile it. They did just that and a judge has now ruled that the case may move forward.

    The original lawsuit from...

Epic Settles with Fortnite Cheat Seller, Donates Money to Charity

A real win on all fronts.

Epic Games recently filed a lawsuit with the Federal Court of Australia against a Fortnite cheat seller. Brandon "BlazeFN" Despotakis was accused of selling Fortnite cheats as well as in-game accounts to other players. Epic filed suit against him in April 2021.

A ruling by the court found that Despotakis violated the Fortnite EULA and terms of service. The cheats sold include aimbots.

He was also found guilty of infringing...

EA Announces EA Sports FC to Replace FIFA Games

Who needs FIFA? Not EA apparently.

It's no surprise that EA and FIFA haven't seen eye to eye over these past several months. FIFA wanted to charge EA a cool $1 billion (USD) every four years to continue using the FIFA license. EA balked at the idea, citing the cost and creative restrictions as the reason, and decided to part ways from FIFA going forward.

Today, EA officially announced that after the release of FIFA 23, the studio will officially change the name of their...

Fight fight fight. Kiss kiss kiss.

On May 9, we shared some news that a 2001 build of Duke Nukem Forever was leaking media across the Internet. That build is supposedly going to be released in June. The story really doesn't end there though.

When news started to circulate about this Duke Nukem Forever leak, Duke Nukem co-creator George Broussard said on Twitter that the leak sure looked like the real deal. He also said that he wasn't really keen on talking more about it...

2001 Build of Duke Nukem Forever Might be Released in June

A leaker wants to get this out to the public.

For better or worse, Duke Nukem Forever sure is a video game. At one point, however, it was an almost completely different game. A version of Duke Nukem Forever that was shown at E3 2001 ended up being nothing like the final release that Gearbox put out in 2011. If you need some sort of a reminder of 2011's release, I did write a review for Duke Nukem Forever (the images are long gone). At the time, I found it to be rather mediocre as did...

In March, Crytek kicked off a special Traitor's Moon event in Hunt: Showdown, the studio's popular PvPvE game. This event would reward players with some legendary skins, provided you played enough to earn enough points to redeem for said skins. Problem was that the event was plagued by constant server woes.

Crytek deployed several patches, hotfixes, and statements about the situation. They apologized to their fans for...

Star Citizen is Adding Bedsheet Deformation

This isn't going over well with fans.

Cloud Imperium Games has been working on developing Star Citizen for well over a decade now. It still is not finished. It's more of a game than it once was, but it's nowhere near finished. According to their own funding tracker, the team has already amassed over $457 million (USD) in funding. Again, the game is still not finished yet.

The latest developer update from Cloud Imperium Games maybe shines a little light as to why the game...

  • How Many Games Did You Complete in 2025?
    by Shawn Zipay
Make up your own definition of "complete."

Was 2025 a big year for game completions for you, or were you more of a "stick to one never-ending, live-service game for the entire year" sort of player?

For this, you can take whatever definition you want as a game "completion." Beat the main story? Earned 100% of the game's achievements? Or simply played enough that you're satisfied with what you accomplished and have no plans to return any time...
