XBOX: 1,600 Layoffs Today, Another 1,600 Over the Next Year, Four Studios Now Independent or Sold, Arkane in Limbo

More broadly, Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs.

Today, Microsoft is laying off 2.1% of its workforce. This equates to 4,800 people that are being let go. The company's XBOX division is cutting about 20% of its entire workforce. All of this is being done in an effort to cut costs due to rising prices and expenses brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).

As a quick reminder: Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on AI in 2026. In 2025, the company spent $80 billion...

PlayStation is Killing Physical Game Discs

Digital only after January 2028.

Starting January 2028, Sony will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation game releases. All games released in January 2028 and after will be available only through digital stores such as the PlayStation Store.

Sony attempts to justify this move by claiming it's a "natural direction" in order to "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."...

That final content update for Destiny 2, Monument of Triumph, takes place on June 9, 2026. Bungie says that they will begin a "new journey as a studio" on that date with includes working on their...

Lord of Hatred Review: Diablo 4 Finally Finds Its Final Form

This is Diablo 4 at its best. I mean it this time. For real.

Returning to the world of Sanctuary for this latest chapter feels like a true homecoming for those of us who have spent hundreds of hours traversing its dark and unforgiving landscapes since the base game launched back in 2023. The release of the Lord of Hatred expansion marks a significant step forward in the narrative that was originally set in motion during the initial campaign and furthered by the events of the Vesse...

EA Considering Free-to-Play Option for Battlefield 2042

EA is apparently disappointed with how poor Battlefield 2042 is performing.

According to leaker Tom Henderson, EA is pretty disappointed with how Battlefield 2042 is performing. Henderson says that the publisher is now "looking at all the options" when it comes to the game. This includes the possibility that the game will go the route of a free-to-play title, at least in some capacity.

Henderson failed to elaborate on these remarks and says he'll have "more...

Battlefield 2042 Update 3.3 Still Won't Include VOIP

The technology just isn't there yet.

As part of their information dump today, DICE provided a few details about what they're working on for Update 3.3 for Battlefield 2042. This update is scheduled to be released in late February. We already took a look at the first release of a scoreboard that they're adding with Update 3.3, but what else can we expect to see?

Update 3.3 will include "changes that have been in the works since we returned after the holidays,"...

DICE is Adding a Scoreboard to Battlefield 2042

The basic "legacy" idea that is a "scoreboard" is finally being added to Battlefield 2042.

DICE has finally broken their silence when it comes to just WTF is going on with Battlefield 2042. While there are a few things to talk about, this one is all about the fact that the development team is finally adding in a scoreboard, though it probably isn't quite what everyone wanted.

The first iteration of a scoreboard will be added as part of a future Update...

Battlefield 2042 Subreddit May Close Due to Toxic Fanbase

Gamers and toxicity, name a more iconic duo.

Battlefield 2042 is a broken mess of a game. We all know this. Nothing has changed since our review for Battlefield 2042 went up in December. This is largely due to the fact that the development teams at DICE went on holiday break for a couple of weeks, like most of us probably did for Christmas and New Years.

After all, the developers did work for a long time on Battlefield 2042 regardless of the current state of the game or...

DICE Removes Battlefield 2042 Rush Mode from Portal

This comes as the player count begins to hit all-time lows.

Prior to going on their holiday break, DICE added in a Battlefield 2042 Rush mode to Battlefield Portal. It proved to be a fairly popular mode, at least as far as Portal modes are concerned. It was the much enjoyed Rush mode but played out across the Battlefield 2042 maps, something that just isn't possible in the main game. DICE kept it up longer than most other modes and fans seemed to be pleased.

    Unfortunately,...

Battlefield 2042 May Not Get Any New Content Until March

This leak comes from well-known data miner temporyal.

The bad news that is the literal everything surrounding Battlefield 2042 will continue to get that much worse if the latest leak is to be believed. To say that the launch of the anticipated latest release in the Battlefield franchise was a bit lacking would be an understatement. Unfortunately, it looks like the game will have to limp along until at least March 2022.

A newly shared data mine, from known Battlefield data...

One month later and already hitting its second sale.

Battlefield 2042 currently has a free play weekend underway on Steam. The free weekend is available through Steam right this very second (so long as you read this before the end date) and can be downloaded and played until your little heart is content.

The free weekend is available (presumably) until December 20 at 1PM (ET). But wait, there's more.

Battlefield 2042 Now Has 64-Player Playlists on PC and Next-gen Consoles

These modes offer improved performance and smaller map sizes.

Today's update for Battlefield 2042 offers next-gen players and PC players a little taste of what life is like on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. For a limited time, Battlefield 2042's All-Out-War modes will include 64-player options for both Conquest and Breakthrough game types.

This is a change that has been requested by players pretty much right as the game launched. The idea is that these reduced player...

Battlefield 2042 Review: A Battlefield in Ruins

Battlefield 2042 is a shallow, feature-lacking mess of a game that appeals to neither long-time franchise fans nor newcomers.

The release of Battlefield 2042 on November 19th should have been a joyous occasion for fans of the franchise. Instead, what the world received was a broken mess of a game that has long-standing "legacy" features removed, barren maps, and a tone that was often at odds with itself. Even after receiving three major post-launch updates, there is very...

More fixes for the broken game are about to be released.

DICE and EA just released the changelog for Update #3.1 for Battlefield 2042. This will be the third major post-launch update released for the game. It will also be the last update for the game in 2021 with more undoubtedly to come throughout 2022.

One of the biggest changes in this update is a supposed improvement to bullet hit registration consistency. DICE has also implemented more balance changes for bullet dispersion...

Ho ho holy crap, what is this franchise turning into?

When Update #3 for Battlefield 2042 released earlier today, there were a few surprises included that shouldn't have been. DICE had mistakenly included the cosmetics that would be coming as rewards for the in-game weekly challenge system. DICE says that the weekly challenges will begin one week from today.

As they were included briefly after the patch dropped, you can be sure that people took plenty of screenshots for...

DICE Did Not Fix the Battlefield 2042 Revolver Reload

    When a six-shooter turns into a five-shooter.

One of the (several) bugs included in Battlefield 2042 was an issue involving the M44 sidearm. Prior to today's release of Update #3, the gun had a very odd issue with how reloading was handled.

At release, a reload of the gun when empty would only reload five rounds. The problem is, there are six rounds in the chamber. You can see it during the reload animation. The gun is supposed to have six rounds and you have 18 rounds...

EA wants to take a Call of Duty approach to the Battlefield franchise.

As part of its major overhaul to the Battlefield development teams, EA also says that they are looking to create a "connected Battlefield universe." The major publisher wants to expand upon the franchise much like Activision has done with the Call of Duty franchise. Taken at face value, this could indicate that EA wants to have multiple studios create Battlefield games and experiences on a more regular...

  • How Many Games Did You Complete in 2025?
    by Shawn Zipay
Make up your own definition of "complete."

Was 2025 a big year for game completions for you, or were you more of a "stick to one never-ending, live-service game for the entire year" sort of player?

For this, you can take whatever definition you want as a game "completion." Beat the main story? Earned 100% of the game's achievements? Or simply played enough that you're satisfied with what you accomplished and have no plans to return any time...
