  • Useless Online Petition for Battlefield 2042 Refunds Hits 162,000 Signatures

I wasn't going to write about this, but here we are.

As you may have already heard, there is an online petition making the rounds that Battlefield 2042 fans are signing in earnest. The petition, found at Change.org, claims that those that purchased Battlefield 2042 should be issued refunds due to "false advertising" along with "millions of dollars in damages" and hurt feelings.

No, seriously, they actually included the reason of "upset thousands of customers worldwide" as one of the reasons they should get a refund.

According to a press email I received today from Change.org, this petition is now the "largest petition in both the video game and consumer rights topics on Change.org so far in 2022." The year is barely into its second month, so that's a bit of a weird flex. As it stands right now, the petition has pulled in over 162,000 signatures from people all over the world who may or may not actually own Battlefield 2042.

According to many consumer reports, Electronic Arts and DICE did not keep many promises made at launch, and Battlefield 2042 was launched as unplayable. Even today, Battlefield 2042 has bugs that drastically change the in-game experience so much that it’s deemed an unfinished release by many community members.
They cite no promises in this petition that were broken or that were lies. There is a big difference between when a company fails to deliver on an announced feature and when a company fails to meet the expectations of fans. So far, I don't see where either EA or DICE failed to deliver what they have promised. If this is about the start of Season 1, it should be noted that no release date was ever announced for it. Furthermore, that content is still supposedly coming.

The petition continues on to say...

In fact, Battlefield 2042 was so poorly made that even Steam, a highly reputable provider of PC video games, allows customers to get a full refund.
This just isn't the case for most people trying to get a refund on Steam. Even the super toxic r/Battlefield2042 and much more sane r/Battlefield subreddits have a good smattering of posts from people that have been denied Steam refunds. Indeed, there are also some success stories from people who have managed to get a refund through Steam beyond Steam's return window, but they are the exception here.

Steam refunds are in no way guaranteed as this petition seems to suggest they are.

Signing this petition will get you one step closer to getting a refund on Battlefield 2042. Suppose this petition receives 50K signatures or more. In that case, I will reach out to some of the best class action lawyers in the country to evaluate a case against EA and DICE.
There has been no information provided by the petition maker about this. This reads more like a fever dream of the creator more than anything of substance.

The gaming community should not tolerate this abuse and bullying from multi-billion dollar corporations who make unfinished games and false advertisements.
Abuse? Bullying? What the hell are you on about?

Unfinished game? The game was finished. A product was shipped and playable. Your definition of playable or finished doesn't really matter here. False advertisements were also covered previously but again, they did not falsely advertise anything.

Whatever it is that this online petition hopes to accomplish just isn't going to happen, at least not because of this petition. Online petitions do not work. Online petitions targeting aforementioned "multi-billion dollar corporations" such as Sony, Microsoft, and EA really do not work. They especially do not work when the petition is poorly written, poorly thought out, and already threatens legal action.

It's nice to think a movement like this could result in some recompense for people who are unhappy with their purchase, but the petition just isn't beholden to the facts.
It's not a great game and it has bugs but that's about it, this isn't Cyberpunk on the PS4 where the game just barely functions, you can have complete matches of 2042 even if there isn't a scoreboard.
In general i don't think refund policies on digital stores are generous enough, in some countries i think they're even illegal but i guess they're covered by the agreements we make when we create accounts on their stores, but if you managed to play enough of the game to where you don't qualify for a refund on Steam that's kind of proof enough that it at least functions, if you've spent over an hour trying to get a brand new game working get a refund.

Battlefield 2042 Review: A Battlefield in Ruins
    by Shawn Zipay
Battlefield 2042 is a shallow, feature-lacking mess of a game that appeals to neither long-time franchise fans nor newcomers.

The release of Battlefield 2042 on November 19th should have been a joyous occasion for fans of the franchise. Instead, what the world received was a broken mess of a game that has long-standing "legacy" features removed, barren maps, and a tone that was often at odds with itself. Even after receiving three major post-launch updates, there is very...

Helicopters about to be a whole lot more annoying.

If you thought taking down helicopters, especially the stealth choppers, were a pain in the ass before just you wait for Update 5.0.0 to drop for Battlefield 2042.

Update 5.0.0 for Battlefield 2042 will arrive on Wednesday alongside the launch of Season 5 for the game. This (presumably) last season for Battlefield 2042 is set to add a new map, Reclaimed, along with new weapons, gadgets, a 100-tier Battle Pass, quality...

Refunds Now Allowed on PlayStation Store Pre-orders but There is a Catch
    by Shawn Zipay

For the longest time, if you wanted a refund from Sony for a purchase made through the PlayStation Store, you were either completely out of luck or were maybe given a one time exception. There were a few other times where Sony cracked open that refund door another inch, such as when games were severely broken to the point of crashing systems, but these were made once in a blue moon. Even then it wasn't a guarantee that you would be issued a refund if you requested one.
