The PlayStation 5 came out in 2020. The Pro variant came out in 2024. It's nearing the end of 2026, and prices for both of these consoles have increased compared to their launch prices. Now, the cost of a used PlayStation 5 Pro is even more than if you were able to buy one new! What the actual fuck are we doing?!
GameStop currently lists used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles for a staggering $1,399.99 (or just $1,329.99 for GameStop Pro members). Other third-party retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart are pricing their used PS5 Pro consoles similarly. Keep in mind that the PlayStation 5 Pro doesn't allow you to play physical discs (not that they'll be a thing soon enough), so that $1,400 is for a digital-only console that debuted at $700 two years ago.
The cost of a new PlayStation 5 Pro is $900. While still an increase of $200 from its launch price, it's still far cheaper than $1,400.
The problem is that demand for the PlayStation 5 Pro is exceptionally high right now, and it's all thanks to Grand Theft Auto 6. Finding a new PlayStation 5 Pro is next to impossible right now, including at places such as GameStop. Production on these consoles can't exactly ramp up much either, thanks to the massive price hikes and component shortages for things like memory and storage.
You know, back in my day, consoles used to go down in price as the generation went on, and the price of used consoles used to be considerably lower than the cost of a new console. This bizarro future continues to suck ass.
