  • Final XDefiant Update Includes Work-in-Progress Content for Three Upcoming Seasons

The devs are going out with a bang.
Two assassins from the Assassin's Creed series, one is holding an assault rifle.

In early December 2024, Ubisoft announced that they plan to fully shut down their free-to-play competitive shooter, XDefiant. The game was pulled from all storefronts on December 3rd with the servers are expected to be taken offline on June 3, 2025. When that date comes around, the game will be no more, and without any sort of offline mode, it will become completely unplayable by anybody.

The final update for XDefiant was released today by the team at Ubisoft San Francisco. This update seems to include just about every piece of content, finished or not, that the studio planned to include over the course of the next three seasons of the game. This includes weapons, skins, factions, and even levels. They also unlocked every item that was included in prior battle passes for everyone to use. As the team puts it, "everything should be unlocked for everyone."

The new factions include the Assassins from Assassin's Creed, Wolves from Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and Blood Dragon from Far Cry: Blood Dragon. To further the notion that a lot of this was work-in-progress, the Blood Dragon faction only has one character available and that character is none other than Mullet Man.

This update also adds in 13 new maps, each with varying degrees of polish. There is even one map, Enchanted Forest, that is Rayman inspired. To go along with that Rayman map is a new game mode, Lum Hunt, that tasks you with collecting the most Lums scattered around the map. There are other new modes such as Defuse, Vs Bots, Tilt, and Turbo XD that were added in this update.

Ubisoft San Francisco also added in some new progression features that were coming later. These include a new Prestige system, badges, faction masteries, weapon mastery skins, and daily rewards.

The team also included several different fixes and balance adjustments for the pre-existing content.

This is certainly an incredible sendoff for the game that debuted in May 2024. It's also possibly a look at the final content ever created at Ubisoft San Francisco. Ubisoft announced on December 3rd that they were closing their San Francisco and Osaka locations. This closure will see roughly half of the team moving elsewhere within Ubisoft while the other half are laid off.

The release has been pushed to between September and October.

Ubisoft's upcoming free-to-play FPS, XDefiant, has been delayed by a wee bit. This is due to the fact that the game has been refused certification by both Microsoft and Sony. This moves the release date from the end of August (which has obviously come and go) to anywhere between the middle of September to the middle of October.
