  • XDefiant Delayed After Failing to Receive Console Certification

The release has been pushed to between September and October.

Ubisoft's upcoming free-to-play FPS, XDefiant, has been delayed by a wee bit. This is due to the fact that the game has been refused certification by both Microsoft and Sony. This moves the release date from the end of August (which has obviously come and go) to anywhere between the middle of September to the middle of October.

The certification process for XDefiant began near the end of July for PlayStation and Xbox. However, around the middle of August is when Ubisoft found out that the game did not pass at either company. Games can be refused certification for any number of reasons. However, the most likely reason would be failing to meet certain compliances or the game had bugs that broke key functionality.

Ubisoft does plan to submit for certification again within about two weeks. If the game passes, they can ship the game by late September. If the game doesn't pass, it's possible that XDefiant could be granted a conditional Pass, which means that Ubisoft will have to implement a Day One Patch that addresses the certification blockers. If this happens, then XDefiant probably won't be out until mid October.

XDefiant is being developed by Ubisoft San Francisco. There have been several beta periods for the game that have gone live over the past year. It is expected to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

I know this isn't the reason, but i'm just now realising that Ubisoft are releasing a Call of Duty competitor into an environment where one of the platform owners now owns Call of Duty, and has spent years creating generous deals surrounding the distribution of COD on other platforms.
