AMD's frame generation tech makes its debut today.
AMD has officially launched AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 (FSR 3) today, complete with their own go at frame generation. FSR 3 is so far only available in two games: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. However, there are plans to include support for FSR 3 in dozens of upcoming titles.
AMD announced FSR 3 a fair number of months back and then remained near totally silent about it ever since. Then they kind of surprised launched it today in the two aforementioned titles. FSR 3 is AMD's attempt to replicate what Nvidia does with DLSS 3 frame generation. Except AMD's solution is called AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF). The frame generation part of FSR 3 is limited to Radeon RX 5000 Series and above for AMD and GeForce RTX 20 Series and above for Nvidia.
This frame generation tech is just a part of FSR 3. Like FSR and FSR 2 before it, FSR 3 also incorporates temporal upscaling technology. This upscaling has reportedly been better optimized, at least with frame generation in mind, but it's a bit too early yet to say whether or not the image quality is noticeably better than FSR 2.2. If you are using FSR 3's upscaling part only, you can run it on AMD Radeon RX 590 and above or Nvidia GeForce GTX 10 Series and above.
With the use off AFMF, AMD claims that you will see "massive performance" increases in supported games.
Of course, you will want to wait until independent third-parties do some deep dives into the technology. It's almost a guarantee that Digital Foundry will take a look at this. I'm sure other outlets will do the same in the days ahead.
In addition to today's launch in Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum, AMD announced that FSR 3 will be included in a number of other titles. Some of those include Cyberpunk 2077, EVE Online, Starship Troopers Extermination, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and more. Furthermore, several studios also voiced support for FSR 3 including Ascendant Studios, Square Enix, Focus Entertainment, Pearl Abyss, and more. Epic Games is also working with AMD to develop an FSR 3 plug-in for Unreal Engine 5.
As I am on a GTX 1080 Ti still, I cannot test how well FSR 3's AFMF works, nor can I comment on image quality. However, some on the AMD subreddit have tested FSR 3 and the initial impressions by those that have tested this with Forspoken have been extremely positive.

by Shawn ZipayI'm somewhere that's not what I would call Earth, I'm seeing freakin' dragons, and oh yeah I'm in a kind of bad game.
The reviews for Forspoken started to come out today and wow, they are not good. They aren't exactly terrible, but for a game that has been sitting in the spotlight for so long, the scores this game is receiving cannot be what Square Enix was hoping for. Forspoken sits at a 69% average on OpenCritic, and what critics have been saying are not painting a very pretty picture...-

by Shawn ZipayBetter have the hardware, else you may be stuck with 720p at 30FPS.
Square Enix just shared some new details about the PC system requirements for Forspoken. They are, without a doubt, very lofty in several different ways. Just to set the tone here, the minimum requirements here will get you only 720p and 30FPS.
No matter if you are aiming for minimum, recommended, or ultra quality, everyone will need at least 150GB of free drive space. You are also looking at needing a...-

by Shawn ZipayA new Nvidia driver is also out, enabling DLSS support in the game.
Square Enix says that Forspoken is now available globally. This Luminous Productions developed game is out for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store for $69.99 (USD). This one is an action-RPG that features magic, parkour, and some sass.
For those who are unsure about picking up the game, there is a demo that has been available on PlayStation 5 for a little while now....-
