Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play.
PlayStation Stars

Sony announced a new PlayStation loyalty program today that they're calling PlayStation Stars. That's not to be confused with the PlayStation 3 title PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale which was not, in fact, a battle royale game.

The announcement was made through the PlayStation Blog earlier. This program is set to being later this year and will be free for everyone to sign up to. Players will be able to complete various objectives. Completion will earn you points. These points can then be redeemed for things like PlayStation Store credit or even some select items from the PlayStation Store.

Those who are also subscribed to PlayStation Plus will get bonus points whenever any purchase is made through the PlayStation Store.

If you don't want things from the PlayStation Store, you may be able to get "digital collectibles" instead. Sony says that these items are "digital representations of things PlayStation fans enjoy, including figurines of beloved and iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment, as well as cherished devices that tap into Sony's history of innovation."

The Washington Post adds a tiny bit more information about this program. They say that the first person to earn a Platinum trophy in certain games within local time zones will get extra special awards that nobody else can get. Well, that sounds very fair and won't at all be abused by those who get early access to titles.

The same article from The Washington Post also says that these digital collectibles are totally not NFTs.

“It’s definitely not NFTs. Definitely not. You can’t trade them or sell them. It is not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs,” said Grace Chen, vice president of network advertising, loyalty and licensed merchandise.
No blockchain? No crypto? No artificial scarcity? Can't make money by selling them because they have no monetary value assigned to them? Alright, Sony, you are correct in saying they aren't NFTs. Just don't go changing this in the future.
