2K and Hangar 13 officially announced the Mafia: Trilogy just as they promised they would. This is a three-game collection that spans the entirety of the Mafia franchise from the first game, through Mafia II, and obviously ending at Mafia III. The fully remade Mafia: Definitive Edition won't be released until August 28. However, if you pre-order the Trilogy prior to August 28, you will be granted immediate access to both Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
This pre-order special applies to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam. You will then be granted access to Mafia: Definitive Edition once it releases on August 28. Physical releases of Mafia: Trilogy will be released on August 28 as well. Together, Mafia: Trilogy will run you $60 (USD) if you do not own any of the games or want to buy it as a pack for whatever reason.
If you want to purchase Mafia: Definitive Edition on its own at release, it will run you $40. Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition will run you $30 each. Both Mafia II and Mafia III include all of the original add-on content, plus some remastered 4K visuals for Mafia II. You can buy this bundle or you can buy the games separately, it's all up to you. Plus, these games will be coming to the Epic Games Store and Stadia at a "later date." I assume it will hit these platforms on August 28 when the full bundle is ready.
Now, what was this about some free upgrades? If you own Mafia II on Steam, you will be given Mafia II: Definitive Edition for free! If you own Mafia III on either the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Steam, you will also be upgraded to the Mafia III: Definitive Edition at no extra cost! Yes, that's a free upgrade for console owners, a very rare sight indeed. If you own any combination of the games, you will get a special reduced-priced upgrade option to complete the trilogy. This upgrade will be made available via in-game menus within each game.
There is some additional in-game content that players can earn. Those that pre-order Mafia: Definitive Edition or the Mafia: Trilogy physical edition before August 28 will get access to some clothing items in Mafia: Definitive Edition:
- Exclusive Player Outfit: The Don;
- Exclusive Vehicle: Smith V12 Limousine;
- Exclusive Weapon Skin: Gold Semi-Automatic.
- Mafia: Definitive Edition: Black Cats Motorcycle Pack;
- Mafia II: Definitive Edition: Made Man Pack;
- Mafia III: Definitive Edition: Classico Three-piece Suit & IL Duca Revolver.
I should perhaps also note that the Mafia II remaster was handled by D3T Limited. They handled the remasters for Shenmue I & II. That should give you some idea of what to expect here. Just don't get your hopes up is all I'm saying. Mafia: Definitive Edition is really where the good stuff is going to come into play as it will be a full remake of the original game.
You can check out some screenshots of Mafia: Definitive Edition (the remake) along with some mixed shots of both Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition below.
It's ok. Maybe a bit less buggy than it was when it first came out and I tried playing it. Really not sure if I have it in me to play it even now after all this time away from it.
The gunplay was pretty great in 3 and driving around listening to Creedence is a good time.
It's not a terrible game in all regards. But that gameplay loop needed to be addressed and it never happened. If they make a Mafia 4, I hope they realize this and address it properly. I'm all for the proper open world stuff but not at the cost of good pacing. And let's face it, the open world in 1 and 2 were just there as a backdrop, not because the games were open world games like 3 attempts to be.
