Initially, Ubisoft said that players would be able to play For Honor's single player content totally offline. That makes sense, right? Playing single player content offline is kind of the norm when it comes to games.
"We built the campaign so that if you bought the game just for that, that you would be satisfied even if you never went online and played multiplayer. It’s intended to be a full experience." - Creative Director Jason VandenBerghe in September

This naturally raised a few eyebrows in the gaming community. Did Ubisoft go back on their word?

According to a statement reportedly coming from the game's Community Manager, Ubisoft did indeed change their mind. You will now need an Internet connection for For Honor, no matter which mode you're playing.
We can confirm that For Honor is an always online experience. Some elements of progression, which is hosted online, are shared across story and multiplayer modes. Players will need to be connected to the Internet at all times to play For Honor.

This statement was reportedly given to NeoGAF user, Gamezone, from the game's Community Manager.

For Honor is still on track for release on February 14, 2017.
