HTC reported that they sold 15,000 HTC Vive headsets in the first ten minutes of being on sale. These are $800 a piece, more if you live in places that aren't the United States. That means that in just ten minutes, they sold at least $12 million worth of product.

Ten minutes. $12 million. This news was first revealed by Shen Ye, one of the employees working at HTC on VR.

How does this compare to the Oculus Rift? It's not possible to say just yet. Oculus went on sale a few weeks back with pre-orders starting to go out in March. That March release shifted to April then to May by the end of the first day. If you place an order for an Oculus Rift now, it won't be in your hands until July at the earliest.

For those of us unable to afford these first generation devices, we should thank those that can. Because there are a good number of early adopters of devices like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, the future looks not only promising for updated tech to be released but also the notion that it will become more affordable as it becomes more mainstream.
