If you haven't played any of the Onimusha PS2 games yet, I feel sorry for you. You should go do that right now. I mean for God's sake, Jean Reno was a character in Onimusha 3, so you know it's legit!Anyway, where was I? Oh right.
It seems as though Capcom has something up its sleeve for the franchise because they recently registered a new trademark for "Onimusha" over in Japan. The last main entry in the franchise came in 2006, with a browser game having been released in 2012. With any luck, Capcom is actually going to revive this franchise and this isn't for some horrific browser game or mobile app.
Please Capcom, don't make a browser or mobile game from this. Please? Also, please don't make it a pachinko machine.
I loved Onimusha 3. Especially when Jean Reno's character beat the ever living $#!+ out of [blank]. I think it was a super lengthly whipping combo followed by a wrestling power bomb (I think?). He was such a bad@$$. The whole time thing got confusing to me though (especially with Samanosuke). Bit bummed out the female character didn't get much playtime, because I thought she wasn't complete crap at fighting given her unfamiliar circumstances.
I also STRONGLY recommend (actually urge) you to play Onimusha Dawn of Dreams. I know, I know, where the *#&$ is Samanosuke, and why does this look like Metal Gear Solid 2's bait and switch of protagonists? Trust me, the story is good and Samanosuke has NOT been forgotten at all. In fact... Play the game. Soki is a really cool character, but he's not the only playable character. In fact, there's a whole team of characters to play as... Play the game. Trust me. You won't miss Samanosuke, especially if you paid attention to the storyline.
I love Dawn of Dreams so much because it contained more features than it advertised. Similar to WCW Vs. NWO: World Tour (where there's a crapton of moves you can do that's unexplained, and secret characters to unlock), the box and instruction manual doesn't explain a HUGE CHUNK of the game's content. Did you know the Japanese had a different game intro AND credit songs by J-Pop artist Ayumi Hamasaki, who wrote the songs specifically for the game (though her label sold them as singles with their own irrelevant music videos)? Did you know you can CHANGE the game to Japanese voiceovers with English subtitles and English game text, which also switches the intro and credits music to the Japanese original?
Did you notice the box mentioned 2 player co-op, but never figured out how to access it? The co-op was in the original design of the game, but lack of time prevented them from polishing it, so they hid the feature. But if you access it, it works perfectly and I finished the entire game with a friend. The problem lies in the lack of game prompts when you want to do certain things. Team combos require two players to input together, prompts that show up in singleplayer do not show up in multiplayer (such as how to fight the final boss), etc. But it works if you know how singleplayer works, so playthrough the game by yourself and note all the prompts that show up in the HUD, and then play multiplayer so you know what to do when you're stuck with an incomplete HUD. But damn it's so fun and satisfying to have two main characters working together to take down demons, especially when you both initiate Oni mode (not the full-on Onimusha mode, that's only for Soki reserved for an important point in the game). Whew, I said a lot about this game didn't I? Trust me, play the damn game. Totally worth it, especially with a friend and proper knowledge/documentation on how co-op works. And again, Capcom didn't forget Samanosuke in this game. They wouldn't @#$*ing dare...
(Damn I didn't think I had so much to say about Onimusha... Wow. Once I start talking about it, it was hard to stop. I guess I do care for the franchise. I mean, for my first choice I played as Soki in Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom on the Nintendo Wii, so there's that.) I didn't play the second Onimusha though. For some reason Jubei never really interested me, even though he's a HUGE character in the franchise. I actually liked the other "successor" Jubei from Onimusha Dawn of Dreams more.
