  • Arizona Sunshine Announced for SteamVR

The first zombie apocalypse game for SteamVR was announced today. It's called Arizona Sunshine and it's being developed by Vertigo Games and Jaywalkers Interactive.

In Arizona Sunshine, you’ve been driving around for god knows how long when you hear a flash of a human voice on the radio, confirming your belief that there are still survivors out in the blistering heat of the post apocalyptic remains of the Grand Canyon state. Arizona Sunshine poses a two-fold battle for survival in a VR zombie apocalypse in which players need to navigate the hordes of zombies coming for their brains as well as the scorching heat that they will come to hate in their search for human contact.

Arizona Sunshine is a VR shooter built and optimized for room-scale VR from the ground up. Step into the midst of a zombie apocalypse as if you were really there, and defend yourself against enemies close enough to touch. A custom-built physical animation system makes striking your undead enemies more thrilling and satisfying than ever before.

    • Room-space VR - Step into the midst of a zombie attack as if you were really there and defend yourself against enemies close enough to touch. Arizona Sunshine is a shooter built and optimized for VR from the ground up.

    • Motion-controlled weapon handling - With HTC Vive’s motion controllers in room-scale VR, handling, firing and reloading your guns never felt so realistic. Anticipate attacks, manage your ammo and consumables, and aim down the sights to blast your enemies to undead pieces.

    • Short and Sweet - The game is built in Bite-sized chunks that flow together to form the complete picture. Whether you want to jump in for a few minutes or stay in the virtual zombie apocalypse for the entire ride, we’ve got you covered.

The game has a tentative release window of "2015" for SteamVR and the HTC Vive.

I feel like this is not going to be a shooter where you can go where you want. Looks like you will stay in the same constricted space just shooting at zombies contantly popping up and coming at you

Yeah I'm wondering if this is going to be a horde mode kind of game as well. Without something like the Virtuix Omni, I'm not sure how you can move between scenarios and environments without a fade-out transition, or automatically move on-rails. The on-rails idea isn't practical since that would surely disorient the player (and usually motions without player input tends to cause motion sickness due to the confusion it causes). My actual guess is that you can move on your own during combat or exploration in an area, but the majority of your long-distance movement will involve the controllers and you standing or sitting still.
