  • Need for Speed Franchise Reboot Announced

EA and Ghost Games today announced Need for Speed. It's not a sequel, it's not a spinoff, instead it's a full franchise reboot.

“Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games. “Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”

Fuelled by EA's own car culture community, Speedhunters, Need for Speed will deliver an experience that's grounded in authentic car culture by diving into the rich world of past, present and emergent trends of the urban car scene. This collaboration with Speedhunters in the research and development of the game means the level of detail and real-world authenticity will envelop gamers in an exciting world to discover and enjoy in a way that only Need for Speed can deliver.

You want even more of a tease? Then it's a good thing they released this new teaser trailer today as well.

So it's Need for Speed Underground 3.
"Rebooting" a franchise of racing games which had different themes, stories and characters nearly every game, is kind of stupid.

My thoughts on the matter (not that they're important):
      • Totally expected a reboot, but wasn't expecting an announcement until next year's E3. So that happened sooner than I thought.
      • With that said, cikame has a point. What happens to Need For Speed: Shift? Last I checked, both games were awesome (and are perfectly suited for VR if EA wanted to). I guess they can reboot that and do NFS: Shift 2018 instead of 3? Reboot the spinoff of the rebooted franchise? Were Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted also reboots? I forgot.
      • Nissan 180SX? Woah... That's hardcore. Not exactly a vehicle everyone immediately thinks of for street racing. Heck I know somebody who's precious car is a 240SX, so this is a really interesting choice for fans of Japanese cars.
      • Any tuning options? No, I'm NOT asking for swapping parts A for B as a stupid upgrade. I mean actual tuning such as suspension settings, ECU programming, and reading dyno graphs. If it's as thorough as Live For Speed, then that's a mistake and you've gone too hardcore for your audience to bother with it. I want fake tuning like Need For Speed Underground 2 (those options were AWESOME, yet fake as heck because I'm too much of a poser to actually handle the real deal). Actually, if it's a more dumbed down version of NFS: U2 then that gives the majority of gamers something to play with, without being too scared to mess anything up. Too lazy? Load up a preset profile included with the game, or better yet, download a profile from armchair mechanics shared online.
      • I don't give a flying **** what kind of city you've built. It can be authentic to an actual city like Midnight Club, or it can be a custom made city designed for ideal gameplay for different types of racing. I'm happy with both Need For Speed's fake cities, as well as Midnight Club's (mostly) real cities. What I DO care is HOW MANY ****ING NEON ARROW SIGNS ARE YOU GOING TO CRAM INTO MY THROAT? AND HOW MANY INVISIBLE WALLS ARE YOU GOING TO FORCE ON ME?! Street racing doesn't have invisible walls disguised as gigantic neon arrow signs! I don't get lost in Midnight Club's open-city racing and it's about time you started experimenting with that. NFS: U2 had the right idea with Outrun races as the only open-world gameplay mode available (leader gets to pick the route similar to Sega's Outrun, but far less linear), but nothing was ever expanded on that since then. If it's really an illegal race where cops are involved, STOP CLOSING OFF THE CITY LIKE IT'S A CIRCUIT! What is this? A prison like Arkham City?
      • I want to tune sleeper cars. I want the car to look stock and look like a slow piece of crap... Until they look under the hood and realize the performance parts in there make the car illegal to drive in public streets. An extreme exaggeration, but I can dream.

So yeah, that's pretty much it.
