  • Bethesda Explains Why They Are Trying Paid Skyrim Mods on Steam

Bethesda has just offered up their justification for why they are offering up mod creators the option of charging a fee for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim mods. Let's see what they have to say.
We believe most mods should be free. But we also believe our community wants to reward the very best creators, and that they deserve to be rewarded. We believe the best should be paid for their work and treated like the game developers they are. But again, we don’t think it’s right for us to decide who those creators are or what they create.(...)

Many have questioned the split of the revenue, and we agree this is where it gets debatable. We’re not suggesting it’s perfect, but we can tell you how it was arrived at.

First Valve gets 30%. This is standard across all digital distributions services and we think Valve deserves this. No debate for us there.

The remaining is split 25% to the modder and 45% to us. We ultimately decide this percentage, not Valve.

Is this the right split? There are valid arguments for it being more, less, or the same. It is the current industry standard, having been successful in both paid and free games. After much consultation and research with Valve, we decided it’s the best place to start.

There are many, many more words on Bethesda's latest blog entry but most of what was actually said was already posted above.

The "current industry standard" is probably very easy to say when you, Bethesda, are the only studio in the industry that are doing this. The actions and reality of what is actually happening is directly in contrast to what you're saying. And frankly, if you give a damn about modding or the modding community, a 25% cut for the modders is complete bullshit.

Valve and Bethesda and are still going about this entire thing in completely the wrong way.

That's ridiculous. Valve might deserve a cut cause they host it on their servers, but Bethesda doesn't need a cut at all, much less a bigger one than the modder.

    by Shawn Zipay
See what critics are saying about the most anticipated game of 2023.

The first major wave of reviews are in for Starfield and, well, they aren't bad. They're not super great either but they certainly aren't bad.

According to OpenCritic, Starfield currently sits at an average review score of 87% with 93% of all reviewers recommending the game. The scores for this one seem to range from as low as 50% to as high as 100% (or 10 out of 10 to be more specific).

Future of Fan-funded Skyrim Multiplayer Mod in Question as Dev Says They 'Don't Owe the Community Anything'
    by Shawn Zipay

There exists, somewhere, the shell of a Skyrim multiplayer mod called Skyrim Together. As its name indicates, this mod tries to turn the single-player Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim into a shared online experience with a group of friends or even strangers. At least, that's what the case would be if the mod was actually out. If the words of the mod's developer are anything to go on, that release may never actually happen.

According to PCGamesN, a member of the mod team named maxgriot...
