By default, players begin their Minecraft adventures as Steve, an avatar that is largely regarded as male in gender. Now, players finally have the option of selecting a female avatar when starting out in Minecraft. Meet Alex, the newest addition to the world of Minecraft.

Alex has apparently been a selectable character in the PC version of the game for a very short time already now. However she won't make her console debut until this Wednesday.
When most players begin their Minecraft adventure there aren’t many looks to choose from. In fact, you only get to play as our blue-shirted friend. Now, everyone loves Steve – he’s probably the most famous minecrafter in the world, and has excellent stubble.

But jolly old Steve doesn’t really represent the diversity of our playerbase. For that reason, we’re giving all players opportunity to play with an Alex skin instead. She brings thinner arms, redder hair, and a ponytail; she actually looks a bit like Jens from certain angles.

And yes, we're well aware that you can simply select a custom skin on the PC. That's still not the same as having a default female skin choice right out of the box.

Mojang also notes that The Simpsons skin pack will be released on PlayStation this week. The Xbox 360 version of the game will get some extra achievements and music this week to make it closer to the Xbox One release.
