The above video from GameSpot for Alien: Isolation shows off how the team managed to achieve "low-fi sci-fi." That is to say, the team actually recorded game elements and UI elements to VHS tape, messed with the cables, imported that back into the game environment and what resulted was pure 1970's magic.
That's actually really awesome.
