  • No Man's Sky from Hello Games is Huge, Ambitious, and Procedurally Generated

Without a doubt, the game that stole the show tonight at VGX 2013 was No Man's Sky from Hello Games. Everything is procedurally generated and will take you from the depths of the ocean to the stars in the sky.

This game promises to allow players to visit any star they see, land on any planet circling those stars, and go anywhere your heart desires.

A randomly generated area is usually fun until you try to have fun in it, we'll see what playing the game actually means.

      Minecraft?
      Terraria?
      Starbound?
      Darwinia?
      Cube World?
      Diablo?
      Diablo 2?
      Torchlight?
      Darwinia?
... even SCP: Containment Breach (which would undoubtedly be boring if it was just one design each play-through)?

Minecraft and Terraria are about digging, where random placement of anything fits, the rest of those use pre-made sections sometimes placed in different arrangements which can work but has been limited thus far.

Imagine flying millions of miles to a new planet to find that crashed derelict ship with the same internal structure you were just in half an hour ago, i'm not saying they can't make it work but i'm not optimistic either.

No Man's Sky - Worlds Part 2 Update
    by Shawn Zipay
Update 5.50 serves as the second part of the massive Worlds update.

Hello Games released their "Worlds Part 2" update for No Man's Sky this past week. This is the second half of their massive, and aptly named, "Worlds Part 1" update that dropped in July 2024. This isn't to be confused with the separate, yet equally impressive, Aquarius update that came out after Worlds Part 1 but before today's Worlds Part 2 updates that added in fishing.

    So what...

    by Shawn Zipay
The 1.3.0.7 update for Terraria, releasing today, brings about an open beta for both Mac and Linux users! This support is current in an open beta, meaning that anybody can give it a try but it could very well be buggy. How do you participate if you're on Mac or Linux? It's simple. Just start up Steam, right click on Terraria, select "properties," select the "betas" tab, and then choose the option for the Mac and Linux open beta. That's it. Click "ok" and you'll be able to install ...

Terraria: Otherworld Cancelled After 3 Years of Development
    by Shawn Zipay
Three years ago Re-Logic announced Terraria: Otherworld, an "alternate dimension" to the Terraria universe that you probably know and maybe even love. The game was going to task players with trying to restore a once-pristine world that has been "overrun by a malevolent force that has corrupted nature itself." It wanted to combine elements of sandbox gameplay with RPG elements and strategy elements. That is to say: It was essentially Terraria set in an alternate universe. Well, it's been c...
