• Adrian Shephard is Back - Prospekt Released on Steam

One man has brought back Adrian Shephard after his previous outing in Half-Life: Opposing Force. That man is none other than Richard Seabrook, who took it upon himself to continue the story of Shephard that may have otherwise gone untold. Fortunately for us, Prospekt not only brings Shephard back, but it also includes a full 15-level campaign that has been given Valve's blessing.

For $9.99 (USD), you get a stand-alone experience that is roughly the length of Half-Life 2: Episode One. You do not need to have Half-Life 2 or any other Source title installed for this.
“After two years, countless hours of development and tremendous support from the Half-Life and PC gaming community I’m enormously happy to release Prospekt today”, said Richard Seabrook, Director of Seacorp Technologies and sole developer of Prospekt. “As with so many it’s been my dream to create video games for a living. Not only do I hope people love playing Prospekt, but that some take inspiration and decide to bring their own video game ideas to life. Enjoy!”

What is Prospekt?
● Substantial, highly-polished and totally new addition to the Half-Life 2 universe, comparable to Half-Life 2: Episode One in length
● Developed by one person, 25 year old Richard Seabrook
● Official Valve approval for Half-Life 2 licence and assets
● Standalone PC game built using the Source engine - no requirement for Half-Life 2 to be installed
● Continues the story of Opposing Force, Gearbox Software’s (Borderlands) update that tells the original Half-Life story from the perspective of the Marines. Gordon Freeman is cornered and being overrun by soldiers in the Nova Prospekt prison; the player controls US Marine Adrian Shephard - the unsung hero - as he’s teleported in by Freeman’s Vortigaunt allies to help fight back.
● 15 new levels featuring fully-scripted puzzles and action sequences, all carefully integrated into the Half-Life 2 story

● Substantial graphical updates over the original game, including but not limited to:
○ New Textures
○ New Models
○ Updated high resolution Combine soldier skins with improved normal mapping
○ Updated high resolution textures
○ Updated lighting
○ Higher resolution models
○ Increased cube mapping
○ Over 20 new particle effects
○ Modded HUD
○ Modded VGUI
○ New player model skin
○ Return to Xen

● New voice acting
● New music
● New AI improvements, such as soldiers attempting to undo the player’s actions

You can check out Prospekt on Steam right now. I hope to have a review up for this game at some point this weekend.

Steam user reviews are currently split in half between liking this game and hating it. The spoiler tags below show what they're arguing about. I'm glad TGN is reviewing it. I want to know what your thoughts are before adding this to my wishlist.

Spoiler:
The levels being "all carefully integrated into the Half-Life 2 story" is something people are arguing about with each other right now. The vibe I'm getting from people's feedback is either "buy it, it's a one-man developer who built a great atmosphere and helps ease the pain in waiting for Half-Life 3", or "don't buy it, it's a generic run and gun game with no meaning behind anything." Even Adrian Shephard's presence is being questioned, because some feel you can drop the name without changing a single thing in the game.

The game isn't great. Level design, enemy encounters, story/motivation... They're all kind of bad.

Played it about an hour last night until my computer BSOD'd. So there's that too.

Damn it, so the negative half of them were right (when I wrote that last post it was exactly 50% of Steam user reviews, and now negative reviews are leading by 10, aka 2%). Not going to my wishlist then. Pass...

I second this, I played it for a bit, but could not get over the fact that it did not feel like the other games in the general series. Granted that this is a "mod-ish" standalone game someone made by themselves I was not impressed unfortunately. I requested a refund on the game only because I didn't see the value of fully playing through the game. Honestly, I had high hopes and expectations of this because it was coming across looking good but it was a major let down .
