  • Steam Surpasses 65 Million Accounts

Valve announced today that Steam has surpassed 65 million total user accounts. That is a 30% increase in growth over the previous 12 months.
Looking ahead to 2014, Valve looks to expand Steam's services and offerings to gamers and developers by holding the Steam Developer Days in Seattle, WA this January and rolling out the recently announced Steam Machines with a variety of hardware partners later in the year.

"The main goal of Steam has always been to increase the quality of the user's experience by reducing the distance between content creators and their audience," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "As the platform grows, our job is to adapt to the changing needs of both the development and user communities. In the coming year, we plan to make perhaps our most significant collaborations with both communities through the Steam Dev Days and the Steam Machines beta."

This gets asked every time a figure like this is released. How many of those 65 million accounts are active and have more than just free-to-play games included?

And for good measure, here's another blast from the past when it seemed like the entirety of the Internet hated Steam. You guys remember that period, right?

I attended the WON funeral service on IRC, so yes I was there when the forced conversion to play Counter-Strike was broken for half the world (who knows why mine worked without issue; maybe due to Windows 98 SE?). I remember the orange interface they used for Tracker, the numerous optimization hotfixes they pushed through so it wouldn't take several minutes to startup, and I remember a much later time when there were different colors to choose from (I chose Ice if I remember correctly).

To me, Steam really felt like another failed venture at the time like PowerPlay. If Steam Machines/Controllers were also announced back then, I would've immediately boycotted VALVe like I do for any evil corporation, who expands without fixing fundamental problems within their organization. Who knew future me would want one so bad? If I went back in time and told myself all this, I would've been killed by my past self for "lying."
