Valve Reflects Back on Steam in 2018 and Looks Forward to 2019

Valve just released a fairly comprehensive "year in review" for Steam that covers everything from the Steam Store, to active users, to a breakdown of users by region, to changes made to the Steam Community, to upcoming changes they're already working on for 2019, and more.

Most of what is discussed in the blog is essentially a recap of what we already talked about at various times in 2018. You're more than welcome to check out the full entry for yourself, but we're going to focus on what Valve is talking about bringing to you in 2019 "and beyond."

Valve Making Great Strides to Combat Steam's Content Problem

Valve just updated their blog today with some information that I honestly wasn't expecting to see. A few months ago Valve's Erik Johnson put up a blog post that more or less said that they were going to be working on making things better in the Steam store and would work on removing games and developers that were being obvious trolls or those with illegal content in their games.

It sounded, at least to me, like they were again going to be super hands off and let the market curate itself. Well I'm eating a bit of crow this evening because Valve updated with some information about the changes they've been working on both forward facing to the Steam consumer and behind the scenes. This is one of those few times where I am happy...

  • Valve Will Continue to Do Nothing About What Games Appear on Steam

Valve Will Continue to Do Nothing About What Games Appear on Steam

Valve has essentially said "fuck it, put whatever you want on Steam just so long as we get a piece."

This seems to be the general tone of today's blog post by Valve's Erik Johnson. The company that runs Steam continues to show that they kind of don't really care about what appears on the platform so long as it's not "illegal or straight up trolling." Of course, Valve also noted that they are the ones who ultimately decide what is "illegal" or "trolling" as it applies to games on their platform.
(W)e've decided that the right approach is to allow everything onto the Steam Store, except for things that we decide are illegal, or straight up trolling. Taking this approach allows us to focus less on trying to police what should be on Steam, and

The GOG Galaxy client received a massive update today that not only brings the digital distribution client out of beta but also adds in universal cloud saves, ability to limit bandwidth on downloads, better chat, and so much more.

For a quick reminder, GOG Galaxy is an optional client allows consumers to easily download their DRM-free games, create backups of those games, allow consumers to roll back to previous game updates, and it supports cross-platform play. And now, let's look at the 1.2 update for GOG Galaxy.

  • GOG Offering 30-Day Refund Policy

    GOG Offering 30-Day Refund Policy

Digital distribution has been less than ideal when it comes to getting a refund on games that either don't work well or don't deliver on promised features. GOG.com is looking to change things, at least for their own services, by introducing a 30-day refund policy.

An FAQ explains the finer points of this new guarantee.
How does it work? If, within 30 days after the purchase of your game, you experience technical problems or game-breaking bugs that prevent you from finishing your game, contact our customer support. They will do their best to help you fix the problem and if, at the end of their attempts to so

    Steam Surpasses 65 Million Accounts

Valve announced today that Steam has surpassed 65 million total user accounts. That is a 30% increase in growth over the previous 12 months.
Looking ahead to 2014, Valve looks to expand Steam's services and offerings to gamers and developers by holding the Steam Developer Days in Seattle, WA this January and rolling out the recently announced Steam Machines with a variety of hardware partners later in the year. "The main goal of Steam has always been to increase the quality of the user's experience by reducing the distance between content creators and their audience," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve.
