Battlefield 2042 has had a hell of a run. From being a disappointing mess at launch to becoming a game that I can safely recommend in its current state. Today, DICE showed off a new trailer for Season 5: New Dawn, the fifth and final season of content for the FPS.
Season 5: New Dawn will launch on June 7. This season will include a brand new map, new weapons, new gadgets, and various quality of life improvements. Some of those quality of life improvements have already started to be shared with the public, including changes to vehicles and Specialists. Naturally, the new season also comes with a new Battle Pass with 100 tiers of content to unlock.
The core content additions for Season 5 are free to all players. Additional cosmetic items can be unlocked through the Premium version of the Battle Pass. Every person that owned the Year 1 Battle Pass will get an additional Epic skin cosmetic and a double XP booster that will last for the first two weeks of Season 5.
The new map in Season 5 takes you to Czechia. The map, Reclaimed, pulls its inspiration from Battlefield 4 and brings the battle to a secret train route.
The derailed train Crash Site allows for vehicle combat, while the Landing Zone forest area enables close-quarters combat and new sightlines opening up when trees are destroyed. In addition, the Abandoned Turbine and Military Warehouse both offer a range of gunplay experiences, from verticality and cover to a narrow space layout.
The Spring Grenade, Anti-tank Grenade, and Mini Grenade are also being added in Season 5
Season 5 offers players the new Squad Management system, a vehicle loadout rework, reworked Vault Weapons, new Thermal Tech and Heavy Anti-Air weapon stations, and more.
Coming later in the life of Season 5 is the final rework of the game's launch maps: Hourglass. This rework will include a new route under the highway as well as reduced distances between objectives.
Finally, it looks like DICE and EA will release something called Battlefield 2042 Elite Edition. This will give those that have not purchased the game a chance to buy the game and all major content from the first four seasons of content that they missed. This includes all maps, all weapons, all vehicles, all Specialists, and the "Lost World" cosmetic bundle.
Those hoping for DICE to continue evolving Battlefield 2042 after Season 5 should tamper those hopes. There is no indication that anything is happening after Season 5. If this really is the last hurrah for Battlefield 2042, at least it's going out on a high note. Let's just hope that whatever comes next for the Battlefield franchise bucks the trend of the previous games and ships in a state that doesn't necessitate that it be fixed over the course of several dozen post-launch updates.
I'm not sure. It's possible to tide us over until the next Battlefield (which wouldn't be long given EA's intent to make Battlefield a stronger franchise - surprising as I thought Apex Legends would've fully replaced their focus), and yet players are confirming Battlefield 2042 is good enough in its current state (including Zips who's been recommending it since PlayStation Plus' monthly game inclusion, and probably before that even). Not quite mirror-shine polish, but nobody's asking for that either.
If the Battlefield community is... Content... Yeah let's go with content... Content with Battlefield 2042's current state (before Season 5 even), then I'm uncertain if EA has any business incentive to put more money into this game, when they could move on unlike Battlefield 4 after their final season (granted Ripple Effect Studios was available at that time to clean up DICE's mess, while DICE gets to start a new project).
Hmm... Will be wondering until after Season 5 releases, where it'll probably come with any sort of announcement on the future of Battlefield 2042.
