AMD's FSR 4.1 upscaling technology has, at least so far, been limited to the Radeon 7000 and 9000 graphics cards. In a new announcement made earlier today, AMD said it is bringing FSR 4.1 upscaling to Radeon RX 6000-series graphics cards, some handhelds like the XBOX Ally, and the XBOX Series X|S.
FSR 4.1 is quite a bit more expensive to run than any iteration of FSR 3. In other words, the gains from upscaling were offset by the fact that it was harder to run in general.
That has been the reason, officially, that AMD never supported the technology on older hardware. Now, due to their partnership with Sony, AMD has been able to get the technology to run with acceptable performance on weaker hardware.
AMD's partnership with Sony has already resulted in a couple of huge additions to PlayStation 5. The first was notably the addition of PSSR on the PlayStation 5 Pro. More recently, Sony added Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) to base PlayStation 5 models. This new form of upscaling tech on older hardware is precisely the sort of advancement made to let FSR 4.1 run on weaker hardware.
AMD's senior vice president of gaming and graphics Jack Huynh says that the company was able to trim the FSR 4.1 model down enough so that it is more efficient for hardware that lacks some of the AI-accelerating hardware found on RDNA 4 cards.
The addition of FSR 4.1 to XBOX Series X isn't available quite yet. AMD says only that it's "coming soon." It probably isn't too big of a stretch to assume that Microsoft will be working quickly to make sure it's available in time for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 next month.
For those running Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs, AMD has released a new Adrenalin driver (26.10.1) today. This new release adds FSR 4.1 support to Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs, Ryzen AI Max 300/400 processors, and Ryzen AI 9 300/400 processors. The new driver also adds support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Star Wars: Galactic Racer, and Final Fantasy Resonance.
XBOX also notes that the next-generation XBOX, Project Helix, will make use of FSR "Diamond" in the future.
