The remaining staff still employed at Bungie just shared new details on what fans can look forward to in Marathon's upcoming mid-Season 2 update. Fans of the extraction shooter will soon have access to Marathon's Vault Breaker PvE mode when the Season 2 mid-season update goes live on July 21. This PvE mode will only be playable until August 4.
This two-week long period will allow for Bungie to collect feedback about the game mode for players. The feedback and data gathered will be used to make any adjustments ahead of the full release of the mode in the near future.
Bungie plans to make the PvE mode a permanent addition, but not until Season 3 of Marathon. Season 3 of Marathon is expected to go live on September 22, but this isn't guaranteed to be the date when Vault Breaker PvE is added as a permanent mode.
When Update 1.1.5 arrives on July 21, the Vault Breaker mode will open its doors and send Runners into Cryo Archive for Marathon’s first experimental PvE mode. You can jump in straight away, whether you’re running Solo, as a Duo, or with a full Trio - and that’s true regardless of your Runner Level.
Vault Breaker offers a roguelite PvE experience inside Cryo Archive, where you’ll take on progressively tougher Vaults across multiple runs. You’ll acquire Vault Data to upgrade your special Sponsored Kit (more details below), or spend that progress on gear in the new Vault Breaker Armory that features weapons, items, and more that you can bring back to your other adventures across Tau Ceti.
Note: All items and gear found in-run are restricted from exfil except event currency and rewards will only be available during the event period, so best to prioritize room for Vault Data and of course, items essential for you to make it to exfil.
Vault Breaker is our very first experimental PvE mode. We're excited for you all to jump in and check it out, and we can't wait to gather up all of your feedback and data as we continue to work towards our full PvE mode, arriving in Season 3.

Vault Breaker will also offer two different tiers of this Vault Data. Tier One Vault Data is obtained only through successful exfiltration or from killing a UESC Commander. Tier Two Vault Data is earned by solving multiple vaults in the same run and then extracting. Bungie says that Tier Two Vault Data will be an extreme challenge for those playing solo.
There will be a weekly rotation of Vault Data items offered to players. There will also be a daily deluxe weapon, prestige weapons, and more. These particular items can be purchased with Vault Data but they can only be used in the regular Marathon game modes, not Vault Breaker.
