  • Outlast Developer Red Barrels Suffers Data Breach

"Players have not been impacted by the event."
A red barrel set inside a red circular outline.

Red Barrels, the studio behind the Outlast games, including the co-op multiplayer title The Outlast Trials, has suffered a "cybersecurity event." This event being an unauthorized intrusion into their internal systems and access to "some of its data."

Red Barrels made the announcement of the intrusion on October 2, 2024 through their website. An exact date or timeframe on when the actual intrusion took place was not disclosed. However, the studio says that once the event was detected, they took measures "to secure the systems and the information contained therein." The studio claims that "players have not been impacted by the event."

A separate report from MP1st claims that the breach did allow access to credit card information. This is, so far, an unsubstantiated rumor based off of the remarks from "someone with knowledge of the situation" speaking with MP1st.

According to someone with knowledge about the situation who wishes to remain anonymous (for obvious reasons), the hacker group behind it is known as “Nitrogen,” and they seem to be a newly formed group. Per the files list shared to MP1st, the hack involves credit card info, HR stuff, game builds, and full source code for at least Outlast 1 and Outlast 2.
The official statement from Red Barrels is a bit more vague on what was or was not stolen as part of this data breach. The most concrete thing shared by Red Barrels is that "the hit on our production timeline has been significant." Their full statement can be found below.

The Red Barrels team regrets to announce that its internal IT systems were recently impacted by a cybersecurity event, involving access to some of its data. As soon as the event was detected, measures were deployed to secure the systems and the information contained therein. A group of leading external cybersecurity experts has been mandated to conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident. We also notified stakeholders potentially affected by the event and the relevant authorities. As a precautionary measure our employees have been offered appropriate support.

With the investigation now completed and the security event contained, we want to reassure you that our players have not been impacted by the event.
The hit on our production timeline has been significant. We will do our best to follow our roadmap but unfortunately, some things will have to be delayed. We’ll share a more detailed update on that as soon as we can.

We take this event and the security of information within our care very seriously. Faced with a constantly evolving cyber threat, the studio will continue to implement appropriate measures guided by best practices to ensure a secure environment for our employees, partners and players.

We appreciate the support of our incredible community as we focus on the future of “The Outlast Trials.”

Band Together in Terror: The Outlast Trials Review
      by Shawn Zipay
The Outlast Trials proves that survival horror can be more fun with friends.

The Outlast Trials is a four-player PvE game taking place in the Cold War era. The game's opening moments and lore paint a gruesome and wicked scene that will be familiar to series veterans but disquieting to those new to the Outlast universe. Players work their way through a series of experiments, each of which plays out on various large maps like a police station, a courthouse, a carnival, and more. The g...

      Roy Lee to lead production.

Developer Red Barrels just announced they are teaming up with Lionsgate to create a feature film based on the Outlast franchise. Red Barrels writer, JT Petty, is already working on the screenplay for the film.

So far, horror film producer Roy Lee is the only other named person attached to this film. Lee is best known as being a producer on films such as 2017's It, Late Night with the Devil, and Barbarian.

      Details on the film are...

      Horror Tropes: The Game
The best thing I can possibly say about Red Barrels' latest horror experience, Outlast 2, is that fans of the original will absolutely eat this game up. And much like its predecessor, I found that Outlast 2 does next to nothing to advance the survival horror genre in any meaningful way. Newcomers to the franchise will probably wonder what all the hype is about and may find that their experience was worth the $30 asking price. While I am sure that many...
