  • Insomniac Games Shares Message Following Massive Hack

The studio says that they are "resilient."

Earlier in the week, over 1.6TB of stolen data from Insomniac Games was published online. Ransomware group, Rhysida, claimed responsibility and demanded 50 BTC for the stolen data, else they would release the data publicly. The time limit on the payment came and went and Rhysida did indeed release the stolen data to the public as they threatened to do.

Some of that stolen data included a wealth of gameplay and details on upcoming projects that Insomniac Games is working on. These include details about Marvel's Spider-Man 3, sales forecasts, an upcoming Venom title, and the studio's announced Wolverine title.

Today, Insomniac Games broke their collective silence on the hack and issued a statement to their fans.

Thank you for the outpouring of compassion and unwavering support. It's deeply appreciated.

We're both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it's taken on our dev tearn. We have focused inwardly for the last several days to support each other.

We are aware that the stolen data includes personal information belonging to our employees, former employees, and independent contractors. It also includes early development details about
Marvel's Wolverine for PlayStation 5. We continue working quickly to determine what data was impacted.

This experience has been extremely distressing for us.

We want everyone to enjoy the games we develop as intended and as our players deserve. However, like Logan...lnsomniac is resilient. Marvel's Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development, as do all our plans.

While we appreciate everyone's enthusiasm, we will share official information about Marvel's Wolverine when the time is right.

On behalf of everyone at Insomniac, thank you for your ongoing support during this challenging time.

Good that they didn't pay the ransom. I'm unfamiliar with Rhysida and don't know how they operate, but I will blindly assume for the sake of attention and hurting people (because there are people who find joy and fun in doing so), they would've released the stolen data either way. It was more of a matter of whether or not they would gain a bonus paycheque or not. They were probably already paid for the cyberattack so they didn't need the ransom anyway. Again, don't know Rhysida and how they operate, so I'm blindly assuming here.

I just hope Marvel will not punish Insomniac Games for this. No accusations like, "it's your responsibility to maintain security and confidentiality" or something.
