Overwatch 2: Invasion is the start of the story content for Overwatch 2, but it comes with a price.

The PvE story content for Overwatch 2 was always going to have some charge associated with it. The plan was to have the PvE content cost a base fee for a full story campaign while the multiplayer remained free. "Free" if you ignore the cosmetic microtransactions, of course.

Then came the news that Blizzard scrapped their PvE Hero content for Overwatch 2. At least, that's what Blizzard said in an interview with GameSpot. Over the weekend during Xbox's show, Blizzard revealed that there will still be some story missions still coming to Overwatch 2. It begins with Overwatch 2: Invasion.

Invasion looks to be the start of bringing over some of the gutted story content into Overwatch 2. Each release, starting with Invasion, will cost a minimum of $15 (USD) or $40 for a larger download. This $15 purchase will give you access to just three story missions. The public response to this news has not been sitting well with fans of the game after the missteps surrounding the series.

Overwatch 2 was announced purely because Blizzard wanted to release a new game with a big focus on story. Obviously, that story content wasn't there when Overwatch 2 launched but it was still promised to come later. Then Blizzard effectively cancelled the story content months after Overwatch 2 launched. But then it's apparently uncancelled but a shell of its former self now? Also, it's $15 for PvE content that used to be free in the first game, and also includes a bunch of extra content for PvP that players who were only interested in the story content may not even want?

It's kind of a big mess. I can only imagine that if you are still somehow a fan of Overwatch or Overwatch 2 after all of this, that these past few months and years have been a real emotional rollercoaster. It's also not super clear whether or not Invasion is the only PvE story content that Blizzard plans to release or if we are going to see several more of these story drops trickling out over time, each coming with a $15 base price tag.
