What was the point of the sequel again?

Overwatch 2 was "necessary" because it was going to introduce all this campaign content and move to a 5v5 format. Those were the reasons why these changes couldn't have just been made to the original Overwatch, or so it was claimed. The hero-based shooter arrives in August.

Well this is certainly an interesting little twist. A Steam page for Blizzard's Overwatch 2 was just put up. The planned release date listed on the Steam Overwatch 2 page is August 10, 2023 even though it has been available on Battle.net and consoles since at least October 4, 2022. The August 10th release date on Steam is the same day that its next season, Season 6: Invasion, is slated to begin.

The reason for Overwatch 2 even being announced is now cancelled.

Overwatch 2 was announced back at BlizzCon 2019 alongside the promise that it was going to include this big PvE Hero component. A PvE Hero mode would further the Overwatch story and lore along with including various progression systems. It was the single biggest selling point on why a sequel needed to happen at all.
