Cyberpunk 2077. Now that sure is a video game, eh? Whatever you may think of it either now or when it first came out, one thing is certain: The game was a massive financial success for CD Projekt Red. The studio announced today that they have sold 13.7 million copies of the game just in 2020. More than half of those 13.7 million were sold on PC and Stadia.
These figures were revealed as part of today's full-year financial report for CD Projekt Red. 56% of all sales were on PC and Stadia. 28% went to the PlayStation 4. Xbox One came in last with just 17% of the total share. 73% of all sales were through digital storefronts.
Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red's management report admits that not everything related to Cyberpunk 2077 has gone according to plan. They say that while they are "proud of most of the pieces which make up the game" they will continue to improve on those pieces that they are not proud of.
Given the knowledge and experience gained in the recent months, we feel we should have handled certain matters differently. This sentiment is reflected by our strategy update, published in late March, which devotes much space to our nascent transformation. Its goal is to streamline our operations and allow us to more efficiently work towards our objectives. Allow me to underscore that we remain committed to pursuing breakthroughs and achieving true innovation. As before, we will not be afraid to enter uncharted territory, undertake risks, and make mistakes.
Just as a point of comparison, CD Projekt Red also revealed that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sales surpassed 30 million units in total in 2020.
