  • Steam Game Recording Announced, Beta Now Live

A new way to save and share gameplay recordings.

Valve just announced Steam Game Recording, a new way to record, replay, and share clips from most any game you plan on Steam.

Steam Game Recording was not only announced today but it is also useable right now. You can opt into the latest Steam beta client to try it out. Valve says you can choose either the "Steam Beta Update" or the "Steam Families Beta" to gain access to this new Game Recording feature.

As this is the first beta release, Valve is asking for feedback and suggestions on how to improve the feature. Already there are several user submitted suggestions on how Steam Game Recording can be improved. For instance, things like being able to save only the last X number of minutes (aka: how Nvidia Shadowplay works) is not included. Steam Game Recording is also an "all or nothing" toggle right now with no way to disable/enable its use on individual games.

Some of the features that are presently included in the beta are:
    • The ability to edit, share, and manage videos both while in a game and when not playing
    • Works with "any" game so long as the game allows Steam Overlay to run
    • Utilizes your GPU (not CPU) for encoding
    • Disk usage can be customized
    • Works on the Steam Deck
    • Add markers manually to the timeline
      • Some supported games will add markers automatically when a relevant event happens
    • The desktop is never recorded by default and you alone choose what to share or save locally
    • Either record automatically in the background constantly or record on demand
      • There doesn't seem to presently be any way to save only the last X minutes of gameplay like with Shadowplay
Hopefully some of the more requested and common features that people are wanting will be added over the course of this beta period.
