You can't say you didn't see this one coming. The servers for Battleborn have been shut down for good. The final day of the game being available to play was January 31, 2021. Gearbox sent the game out not with a bang, but with a whimper.

The final update for the game came all the way back in October 2017. We knew about the server shut down as early as November 2019. Last night, the plug was pulled from the servers and the last remaining fans of the game bid their farewells.

I will freely admit that I was a fan of Battleborn back nearer to launch. It reminded me a lot of Super Monday Night Combat, but its fate was written in the stars long before its release. It was more of a MOBA than a Hero shooter, which was enough to push a lot of people away initially. It also didn't help that Gearbox's own Randy Pitchford muddied the waters when talking about the game with stuff like this...

My word, what an infamous tweet that has turned out to be.

It did not help matters that Battleborn released almost hand in hand with a little game called Overwatch, which still seems to be going fairly strong these days. In fact, Overwatch had a beta weekend right when Battleborn was released. Ouch.

With the servers being pulled on Battleborn, this means that no part of the game is playable in any capacity. The game required an online connection, even for the single player component. If you boot up the game now, you will be greeted with a short message from the team at Gearbox, offering their thanks to the community.

"Heroes! It's been a hell of a ride, but all fights must end. The campaign and multiplayer are no longer available as the Battleborn servers are offline. Thank you for playing."
Battleborn was released on May 3, 2016.
