Square Enix revealed via an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, that there will be "dramatic changes" made to the battle system in the Final Fantasy VII Remake that the studio is working on. Here is what Game Director Tetsuya Nomura had to say about what they're doing.
"And of course, that being said we want to clarify: We’re not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that. We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it’s still recognizable."

Square Enix also revealed that they'll be pulling some inspiration from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, the 2005 film based off of the popular franchise. It probably stands to reason that they would pull inspiration from the film since Nomura directed it. Inspirations from the film will include visual references and inspiration but the game will not make use of the character models from the movie.
