  • The Evil Within is Now Available

Bethesda, Tango Gameworks, and Shinji Mikami are pleased to announce that The Evil Within has now been released in North America and Europe.

The Evil Within embodies the meaning of pure survival horror. Highly-crafted environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story combine to create an immersive world that will bring players to the height of tension. With limited resources at their disposal, players will fight for survival and experience profound fear in this perfect blend of horror and action.

“It was incredibly important to me and the team to bring the Survival Horror genre back to its roots. For us, it was all about creating fear and giving the player the enjoyment of conquering it,” said Mikami. “Up until now we’ve kept a lot of the game under wraps to avoid spoilers, so it’s very exciting that people are now able to experience the game from beginning to end.”

In The Evil Within, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners are called in to investigate a gruesome mass murder. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel what’s behind this evil force.

As this is a fairly full week as far as new releases are concerned, I will mention that I am working on a review for this game alongside Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. However, given the size of both of these titles, it may be nearer to a week until I'm able to get a review up for either game. With that said, it's been getting plenty of good to great scores from other outlets, so take that for what you will.

If you're playing this on PC, it would be good to hear about or see what the game is like with the black borders removed.
I had to laugh during the Giant Bomb quick look, right at the beginning, when while climbing down a ladder they couldn't see the enemy at the bottom because of the screen cutoff, then later on when looking for an item on the ground but not being able to see anything near their feet.

Video games arn't movies, players need the full screen for exploring their environments.

The "solution" that Bethesda implemented in the console commands to remove the black bars is perhaps the worst offender. Here is how the bars are removed:

Not my images but the point stands. They don't just remove the bars, they crop the image. IE: They zoom in so that not only are the bars removed, but your FOV is still jacked up.

Critical Consensus: Alone in the Dark
    by Shawn Zipay
Fails to live up to others in the genre this franchise helped to create.

The Alone in the Dark reboot was just released today and it seems like the reviews have placed it firmly in the realm of being merely ok but with some serious shortcomings. This release from Pieces Interactive and THQ Nordic currently sits at a 62% critical average on OpenCritic, with only 42% of reviewers recommending this new release.

Interestingly, the actual scores for this game range everywhere...

    Ranking the Resident Evil Games
    by Major 0
For years, Resident Evil has dominated the survival horror genre. Heck, they are often credited with creating the genre in the first place. The first Resident Evil came out back in 1996 and once it did, the gaming industry was forever changed.

In the 25 years since, developer Capcom released a fair number of new entries to the franchise, including some spin-offs, and even a couple of remakes. Today, we will take a look at the best of the mainline franchise releases and determine which...
