XBOX: 1,600 Layoffs Today, Another 1,600 Over the Next Year, Four Studios Now Independent or Sold, Arkane in Limbo

More broadly, Microsoft is cutting 4,800 jobs.

Today, Microsoft is laying off 2.1% of its workforce. This equates to 4,800 people that are being let go. The company's XBOX division is cutting about 20% of its entire workforce. All of this is being done in an effort to cut costs due to rising prices and expenses brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).

As a quick reminder: Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion on AI in 2026. In 2025, the company spent $80 billion...

PlayStation is Killing Physical Game Discs

Digital only after January 2028.

Starting January 2028, Sony will no longer produce physical discs for new PlayStation game releases. All games released in January 2028 and after will be available only through digital stores such as the PlayStation Store.

Sony attempts to justify this move by claiming it's a "natural direction" in order to "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs."...

Lord of Hatred Review: Diablo 4 Finally Finds Its Final Form

This is Diablo 4 at its best. I mean it this time. For real.

Returning to the world of Sanctuary for this latest chapter feels like a true homecoming for those of us who have spent hundreds of hours traversing its dark and unforgiving landscapes since the base game launched back in 2023. The release of the Lord of Hatred expansion marks a significant step forward in the narrative that was originally set in motion during the initial campaign and furthered by the events of the Vesse...

    Tim Sweeney is always mad.

The antitrust lawsuit against Valve from Wolfire Games got a little spicy this week. To quickly get you up to speed: Wolfire claims that Valve uses its position with Steam to control game prices and muscle out competition. Though the initial lawsuit against Valve was dismissed, Wolfire amended their suit in May 2022 and the legal battle was back on.

It may have taken almost two years, but we are now starting to see some of the documents that...

Don't Be Fooled, The Day Before is Not back on Steam

The new listing looks to be an even bigger scam than the legit game.

You may have been informed via various social channels that The Day Before snuck its way back on to Steam today. From all outward appearances, the page looks to be a copy of the legitimate listing for The Day Before, at least before it was pulled from all storefronts and a bunch of drama ensued.

A "new" Steam listing for The Day Before popped up a few hours ago on the Valve run storefront....

The 'Valve Prism' VR Headset is Fake

Stop believing everything you see on the Internet.

The Internet did that thing again where they latched onto a clear hoax as if it were real. Someone put up a website for a "Valve Prism" virtual reality headset earlier today and tried to pass it off as a legitimate device from Valve. Except it's fake. It's not real. You all got bamboozled.

At a glance, the website seems convincing enough. It depicts various renders, fluff words, and impressive technical specs...

The fan-made project is being created using RTX Remix.

RTX Remix will allow mod makers to "remix a compatible, classic game" with fancy ray tracing and other Nvidia technologies. Though the public beta won't be out until January 22nd for RTX Remix, some modders were granted special early access to the tool.

Steam Sets New Concurrent User Record Just Because They Could

Steam is off to a strong start in 2024.

You would think that new concurrent user records might have been set during the big Steam Winter Sale, which ended just earlier this week. You would think that, but apparently you would be wrong. Instead, a new concurrent user record was set by Steam on a weekend in which there are no sales, no Steam Fests, or really anything else truly notable going on.

On the morning of January 7, 20224, Steam set a new concurrent user record....

On January 8, 2024, the Steam Capitalism and Economy Fest will kick off. It will offer a week's worth of discounts, demos, streams, and more on all games "centered entirely around a player's earning power." Valve mentions...

Steam No Longer Supports Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

If you haven't moved on, it's long past time you did.

Microsoft stopped officially supporting Windows 7 for regular users in 2020 and Windows 8.1 support ended in 2023. At best, you've had a year to update to a newer version of Windows. At worst, you've had four years. You should have moved to Windows 10 or Windows 11 by now if you are online at all with those operating systems. Years of no security updates is bad enough, but this week it just got worse.

    Valve officially...

  • How Many Games Did You Complete in 2025?
    by Shawn Zipay
Make up your own definition of "complete."

Was 2025 a big year for game completions for you, or were you more of a "stick to one never-ending, live-service game for the entire year" sort of player?

For this, you can take whatever definition you want as a game "completion." Beat the main story? Earned 100% of the game's achievements? Or simply played enough that you're satisfied with what you accomplished and have no plans to return any time...
