Valve just freed Dota Underlords from its Early Access limbo today. Today's release also marks the beginning of Season One for the game. The launch also includes "a ton of content to explore, rewards to earn, a hero/Alliance/item shakeup and more." Let's see a bit more about what today's release means for Dota Underlords.

Let's start with the fact that Dota Underlords is a free to play game. Yes, there are optional purchases that can be made, but we'll touch upon that in a second. Dota Underlords is free and can be downloaded and played right now through Steam on the PC. It is also available for mobile devices on both iOS and Android.

There is a Battle Pass for Dota Underlords. This is a lot like most other "Battle Pass" ideas that exist for other games. That is to say, there are over 100 rewards that can be earned throughout the game's first season. In order to earn those rewards, all you need to do is play the game and you'll level up over time. The Battle Pass for Dota Underlords will run you just $4.99 (USD). The Battle Pass is not at all required to play the game. It just provides bonuses.

Some of the bonuses given by the Battle Pass include things like new boards, weather effects, customization options for your profile, skins, and more. There are no gameplay altering items to earn through the Battle Pass.

Valve has pulled a couple of Heroes for this first season. Heroes and Alliances that have been yoinked are Scrappies and Inventors. Their replacements are Heroes like the Summoner, Vigilant, and Void Alliances which are new for Season One. A new item type has been added. That item... hats. Valve has added hats to Dota Underlords. Please try to act surprised.

Valve is also giving a little treat to those that participated in the Beta Season for Dota Underlords. These include a Golden Ricky Statue, a poster title, and both of the Season 0 maps.

Dota Underlords is Valve's first-party answer to the popular Dota Auto Chess mod that was all the rage a few months back. The creator of Dota Auto Chess has gone on to make his own standalone title, simply called Auto Chess.


GENERAL GAMEPLAY CHANGES
Item Rounds
  • The choices for each Item Round can be rerolled one time. The 3 choices are blacklisted and will not be possibilities for the reroll.
  • In Standard, Item rounds now come at a quicker pace - every 4 rounds instead of every 5 rounds.
    • OLD: Rounds: 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc.
    • NEW: Rounds: 1, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.

Ace Effects
  • Ace Effects have been removed from the game. This applies to the bonus chance to find an Ace as well as the Ace bonuses themselves. This system is going to be reevaluated and may return in a different form at a later date.
  • Ace Tier renamed to Tier 5.

Poison
  • Poison healing reduction increased from 10% per stack to 15% per stack.

Beneficial Cells
  • Cells that are marked as "beneficial" from an ability (such as Drow Ranger's Precision Aura, a Knight's Alliance bonus, or a tasty Mango) should now be working in all cases.
