  • HTC Announces Vive Virtual Reality Headset and Partnership with Valve - Consumer Product Expected in 2015

During today's special HTC event at the Mobile World Congress, HTC revealed the HTC Vive, a new virtual reality headset they are working on in a special partnership with Valve.

So far, we know the following things about the Vive:
    • 90Hz display
    • 1200x1080 resolution per eye
    • 360 degree tracking
    • It will ship with controllers
    • These controllers are "custom" dual-wield controllers that include position tracking and are made by HTC specifically for VR
    • Includes an audio jack to connect your headphones into for audio
    • A pair of (potentially optional) base stations will allow for accurate tracking anywhere in a 15"x15" room
    • Even without the base stations, the tracking is said to be accurate to within "1/10th of a degree"

They were even so kind as to show put up a reveal trailer for the device.

The HTC Vive website, aptly named HTCVR.com, provides a few additional looks at the device. They also have a place where you can sign up to be notified of future updates.

So, when does this release and how much will it be? The developer edition is slated to arrive this Spring (2015). The consumer version is currently on track to be released later this year. As of right now, we don't have any idea on what the price may be. Undoubtedly, we will see a lot more of this during Valve's various GDC presentations.

Ahead of the official price announcement comes the leak that the virtual reality device, the HTC Vive, will run you $799 (USD) when it's released in early April (2016). That puts the price of the device at a cool $200 more than its nearest competition, the Oculus Rift. And cue the outrage! The difference here is that the SteamVR powered HTC Vive comes with two "Lighthouse" base stations that use lasers to more accurately track movement throughout a room. The bundle also includes two actu...
