Creative director Patrice Désilets is finally getting to make the game he's wanted to make for well over a decade. Désilets and game development studio Panache Digital Games, just re-revealed 1666: Amsterdam. This is a dark, third-person story-led action-adventure game that had a world premiere trailer at Summer Game Fest.
Désilets was the key figures behind the Assassin's Creed franchise at Ubisoft. Not content with how Yves Guillemot wanted to have a new Assassin's Creed game released every year, Désilets left Ubisoft and joined up with THQ. In 2012, 1666: Amsterdam was trademarked by THQ. THQ then went bankrupt at the end of 2012 at which point none other than Ubisoft bought the THQ studio where Désilets was working, THQ Montreal.
Désilets then left Ubisoft again in 2013, with Désilets claiming that he was fired from Ubisoft. Ubisoft retained the rights to 1666: Amsterdam until some time in 2016. Désilets apparently regained the rights to 1666: Amsterdam at that point. After his other title, Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey, was released in 2019, it's reported that Désilets and Panache Digital Games shifted all development efforts to 1666: Amsterdam.
This new trailer from Summer Game Fest is the first look we've been given at 1666: Amsterdam in almost a decade and a half. Not only were we given an entirely new trailer, but it was revealed that 1666: Amsterdam will enter into Early Access on PC in 2026. Console versions are coming at a later date.
Players can also download and play a free standalone narrative teaser, called 1666: Amsterdam (Prologue), right now through either Steam or Epic. The Prologue lasts for about 30 minutes and introduces the world, characters, and "core mystery" of 1666: Amsterdam.
What will unfold in Amsterdam did not begin there.
It was set in motion long before the first canal was dug, before the first stone was named.
In the year 1333, the contracts were sealed.
And ever since, the city has lain under their influence.
The Collector now stands invested.
As the cycle reaches its end, another begins.
About the Game
Amsterdam, 1666.
A city built on wealth, power, and sheer will, yet shaped by forces it did not forge.
Entities known as the Originals have lived among its people for centuries, granted time, granted power, and the freedom to abuse both. That power is now owed.
Noa Brooklyn was born the Collector, raised by the Zaindaris for a purpose she did not choose.
Aaron, drawn from 1999, now sees the world through the eyes of a cat.
This is where the cycle begins.
Before the first Esbat. Before the Collector realizes what awaits her.
The Prologue of 1666: Amsterdam offers a first glimpse into a world shaped by centuries of hidden influence. Step into Noa’s Commencement as she takes on the mantle of the Collector, and begins to understand the role she was born to fulfill.
A choice must be made. A companion will walk beside her.
This is only the beginning.
